ATI TV question

Ok I know this could go into a couple of different categories. My question is how do you setup a ATI Tv tuner to respond to a Directv connection and get all the channels? I have run a cable (like in cable TV) from the source to the tuner, however I can only get the channel that is currently being displayed on the source. Any help would be appreciated.

But even if you have cable you either:

A) Hook the cable to the cable box and then go to the ATI card and watch whatever channel the cable box is tuned to, or

B) Hook the cable directly to your ATI card and watch only basic cable. That is what I do with my AIW.

You need the receiver/tuner from your satellite to "decode" the channels as all channels are basically scrambled. With cable TV your ATI card can decode basic cable (unscrambled) but your cable box is necessary to decode the premium channels like HBO or Showtime. This is really no different than hooking up a VCR.

In short... you can't make the TV Tuner do that.

Ok then on another note, this is just a thought...

I currently run Sattelite TV and a cable modem for Internet. Seeing as the cable is already right next to my PC could I split this signal and use it in the video card for reception or is this strictly a data signal with no television qualities?

Sure would be nice to flip through channels on this thing without having to use the air antenna.

Well I won't steal it, I was thinking more along the lines of ordering the (very) basic package to have it on my system. But I was not sure if I could split that signal. I certainly will never go back to cable TV for my regular TV set, however for the nights up working it sure would be nice to view it on the PC.

Thanks....

There's is a BIG difference between the direct cable coax connection and the DirecTV s-video connection on my AIW Radeon 7500.

My advice: Get another receiver (cable OR DirecTV) and use the s-video connection (composite connect at least).

For DirecTV:
If you have ONE dual LNB on the dish, you will also need a multi switch [3 IN / 4 OUT (you will use 2...the 3rd is for local antenna)] to hook up a 3rd and/or 4th box. The additional receiver is $50-$60 and the multi switch is about $30. Plus cable.
You cannot use regular splitters!

* [You only need a multi switch for 3 or 4 receivers(total)-not for only 2 (total)]

You DO need a dual LNB on the dish for two, though... run one line to each box and you're set.

GL 😉

You can only change channels from the cable or directv box- the tuner in the tv card gets set to channel 3 or 4 - like VCR settings.

I already get the Direct TV reception with the single channel 3 selection and have to change the channel from the receiver box. I am using the Coaxial from the Direct TV feed to the AIW. I was wanting to be able to change Direct TV channels from the AIW withou having to go into another room to do this. Looks like that will not happen no matter what I do.

RF remote or another box are your options. Get that puppy wired with s-video or composite! Running appropriate quality cables from another room wil be more expensive than a second box. You want it (so get it) or the capture card is moot!
