i have a x1800 xt. im currently overclocking with ccc overdrive.

i am using ATI Tool to control my Fan Speed.

IS THERE A PROBLEM WITH RUNNING THE FAN HIGHER THAN DEFAULT...50, 60, 80, 100% The higher fan speed seems to really keep my temps down. But, im concerned about burning out the fan etc... is this advisible or risky...

I think it's better to burn out a fan than a "gpu" or videocard chipset. You can always replace the fan. 😛

off topic....but why would you need to overclock that card??? $500 only to tweak more

good question... actually, i didnt plan on overclocking at all. however, after running and testing it in 3dmark05 and games, im a little dissapointed in my performance at stock speed. at stock i was only getting 8400 in 3dmark... i should really be getting 9000 or up i would think. also, far cry and battlefield 2 was a bit choppy at 1600x1200 with aa/af and high settings. thats why i paid almost 600 for this card...to play smooth at 1600x1200 with eye candy.

so... i slowly overclocked using the ati ccc overdrive utility. im running stable at max settings 690 - 800. my 3dmark went up to 8907. but, started to run warm...so, i used ati tool to kick up fan speeds... works well...brings temps down.

now, im just wondering if this is safe, and the best way to do this...

any input from someone in a similar situation...

on my 6800....when i oc'd it i had the fan set to 100% always....that was used for like 6 months w/o failures if that helps

I think you should be fine-how warm was it running? Did the increase in speed smooth out the games?

cool.. im running it at 100% during games. when in windows..just default speed.

the ccc overdrive overclock helps some, but 3dmark is still only around 8900. seems low compared to other scores ive seen. still have to cut back some eye candy in far cry and quake 4
