ATI Tool Help

Okay, a few things

I'm trying out the 6.3 Omega drivers w/chuck patch and am trying to overclock my card through ATI tools (the new beta one). (Well, actually first I'd like to at least clock it to the correct spces. ATI tools puts it at 499.50 on the core and 594.00 on the slider bars.) However, everytime I type the correct specs in the Core and Memorey tabs, all of my systems freeze and all I can do is move my mouse.

Temps are fine, great actually, and the fan is at a constant 100%. I was wondering about the voltage settings though. The fact that you can use them is awesome coming from an Nvidia that I had to bios flash for better voltages. But the problem I run into with that is everytime I set the VPU core voltage to anything higher than 1.175 I get the same kind of freeze. (Another thing that is confusing me is that the core voltage is 1.175, yet my Nvidia needed a 1.5 volt mod in order to get specs to what the ATI already had? I thought Nvidia was more effecient and needed less power to do its stuff?

In the "Overclocking" section no boxes are checked so the sliders don't get set until I actually set them. As far as the "Use clock safety range" I've tried that on and off and as far as I can tell, it makes no differance. Under "Miscellaneous" I have "Limit log file size to 10000 KBytes" checked and "Remove Radeon 9000/9200/9550/9600 clock lock" checked.

That's all I've done with it, and I am just wondering if anyone has set something I havent' that keeps them from getting a freeze. I'm really wanting to get familiar with this program as I think it would be a pretty good overclocking utility. ANY help would be awesome.

First you have to disable the ati2evxx service on your system (Ati key poller). It controls the automatic switching from 2d to 3d clocks on the card. What Atitool shows is the 2d clocks and voltage. After disabling the service, manually raise the gpu voltage to 1.4v. Then set the clocks to desired speed. Also, do not set the clocks while the furry cube is showing because for me it causes a freeze.

Munky is correct. You will need to create an ATI Tool 3D Profile w/ the correct timings and voltage(I only use 1.35v for 3D). You can then have ATI Tool boot-up w/ windows and have your 3D profile enables when a 3D App is detected and then switch back to your 2D(or Default) Profile when the 3D app is closed.

Well, I did what you guys suggested. Opened ATI tool, terminated the ATI2EVXX.EXE process, made my own profile, set the VGPU voltage to 1.4, made a 3D profile, went back to the main screen, typed "700.00" in the "Core" tab, then typed "800.00" in the "Memory" tab, and pushed "Set Clock". Then I scanned for 3D artifacts. The fuzzy cube didn't move at all but the counter kept going while the GPU temp went up to 66C. After 53 seconds my computer stops responding and all I can do is move the mouse. Shortly after, the screen goes black, so I restarted it.

Are you guys sure that is all you have to do? I still think something is making it crash. It says in the Voltage Control that the VDDCI is an additional core voltage on R580 boards and its at 1.486. Does that need to be messed with? Also, I didn't understand what was meant by the timings. If I click on the Mem tab at the bottom right corner of the main screen, all it says is that the timings are not supported by this chipset.

Please help give anymore info as I think this might be one of the best ways to overclock an x1900xtx since it is a program designed to do just that.

I also have one question related to this: Is it true that ATI Tools undervolts GPU voltage by 0.25V? I remember reading so at these forums, but I can't seem to find any facts about it. Or is just rumour?

Really? I don't know about that one.

I just don't know why mine did what it did.

It could be because your card cant run stable at 700mhz. First, I would test the core and mem separately, so you'll know which one is the limiting factor, and how high they can clock independently. Then you can test both once you've determined the max stable clocks for each.

If your temps are below 80C, then you can try increasing the voltage to 1.425 and see if that helps. But hitting 700mhz is not a guarantee with these cards, so you may just have a bad overclocker.

what is usually "guaranteed" norm? because i find countering statements from owners:

"A lot of the guys that I have seen have hit 700-725MHz on the core and 800-875MHz on the mem. Most of those results were on the stock cooler or aftermarket air cooling. "

I'd say what these guys are getting is the norm using stock voltage, and even that is not guaranteed. Many people may be getting 700mhz by increasing the voltage and running the stock cooler at 100%, but I havent tried it yet.

thanks for the links....kinda sucks though, the board i was going to get overclocked the worst and was one of the highest cost :(

any reviews with max overclocks w/ overvoltage and aftermarket cooling?

I'll try what you suggested munky. That's what I had to do when overclocking my SLI rig I had. (Overclock two things seperately, then combine best results).

I have heard of an x1900xtx reaching 1000Mhz on the core, but they were using liquid nitrogen to cool it and all that jazz. Can't say I have that option.

I'll post with results as soon as I see what happens.

I have the same issue. Even if my X800XTPE is running at default speed, the ATI Tool make my system unstable. Pity that I had to uninstall it and reinstal the bloated CCC again. Since then it works perfectly, but with the new CAT 6.4 the overdrive tab doesnt appear? WTF?!?!
