ATi still having driver issues?

Will be upgrading to a HD4870 or GTX 260. I like nV cards but am considering ATi as well but have read they may have driver issues. Is this true if so, how do these issues affect gaming?

I'd say they are nearly on par with nvidia as far as issues go.
This question pops up from time to time and usually results in opinions and personal experience.
I've had very little issues with either one, although I seem to prefer ati drivers lately because of their strong linux support.

I've had very little issue with ATI's drivers until recently. Seems like every other driver release gets me a MOM.implementation error. To get the 9.2 Catalyst drivers to install, I had to download the separate CCC and driver only packages, and then install them in a specific way to get them to take. Ever since the 8.11 drivers, it's been something akin to voodoo magic getting the newest installer to work properly. It's seriously to the point that my next card might be an nVidia one (not that this would be a bad thing, I pretty much get whatever gives me the best bang for the buck). Even more so if I decide to go with a Core i7 system and get a SLI capable motherboard.

I've been on a 3850 for a while, and I've been fine. From reading some of the forums, most of the issues are if you use crossfire or X2 cards. Dual-card implementations seem to have trouble in general though, not specific to ATI.

I recently switched back to ATI after having nV cards for the last 3 years and I haven't had severe issues while gaming (fullscreen on non-native res didn't work for some games but seems to be fixed for me in Cats 9.3). The other issue I had was the flickering due to the 2D/3D clocks but I used ATI Tray Tools to fix that and I don't know if it's been fixed in the drivers since I always use Tray Tools now.

Sounds like it's a hit or miss thing. Hopefully their will be a nice price drop when the new cards are released.

Zero problems. Don't use driver cleaners/sweepers and you won't have problems. Yeah, here come the flames on that comment...

No issues for me with 9.2s or any ATI driver since 8.6s with my 4870,I would say I have had better luck with ATI drivers then Nvidia so yes good as Nvidia at least IMHO.

I'd say you may want to list out some games you play or plan to play, do a bit of research and then make a decision about drivers. I'd also highly recommend a faster CPU as that X2 4800+ will bottleneck either GPU you're considering. That's not to say you won't see an improvement over your 7900GS, it just won't be as great as if you had a faster GPU as well.

ATi drivers are known to contain heavy metals that contaminate children's drinking water, and kill puppies (cute ones).

----------------------

In reality, both companies can have driver issues in new released games, but these problems are usually cleared up with the next hotfix or beta release.

I think they kick kittens too. In all seriousness, my original post was a bit harsh. Overall, my experience with ATI's drivers have been pretty positive. I especially like that their GPU scaling works without a hitch on my widescreen monitor, and when I don't have problems getting the installer package to work; the installed drivers are pretty rock solid.

I get the MOM.implementation error as well on my X850XT. I also don't like that you can't adjust each setting for each game using CCC. I don't want to use a third party tool either.

You can do this from CCC. Just create a Profile for each game.

The latest drivers going forward from I believe March are dropping support for some older cards so be aware of that issue.

In all honesty, drivers are pretty comparable. nVidia drivers are probably a tad more stable though as a whole. This does not in any way mean that ATI drivers are bad. I just feel that nVidia drivers are a tad better but overall, the drivers are quite comparable between the two companies. Each driver has it's own little quarks and issues.

I haven't had any major issues with my 4870 nor have I had any major problems with my last three video cards. My last cards were a Radeon X1900, then a Geforce 8800GTS, then a Radeon 4870.

Do not believe the lies about how eye bleeding bad ATI drivers are. You'd have to go back 5+ years for the really terrible drivers.

Well I tired that but it only lets me chosse global settings. In Nvidia, I can choose v-sync AA AF...

You have to change each 3D setting in the CCC itself, then go to the Profiles Manager and save that profile. Then go back to CCC and change the 3D settings again and then open the Profiles Manager and save those settings in another profile. Do this for whatever settings you want for whatever games.

Back when I had my 8800GTX I had some bad issues with drivers playing WoW, I know all companies have driver issues or they wouldn't have to keep making new ones. The whole thing over the net about ATI drives being bad just needs to go away, its been going on far too long now. You take a chance on any card you buy that the drivers may not be right, its the nature of the beast.

Ooo, I see. Thanks for that. That is very annoying though.

It amuses me when people post critizing ATI's drivers, especially those that have clearly only been on the "computer' scene for a short while.

ATI's driver's for a long while now have been quite good...with only minor issues every now and then which as others have stated are usually fixed with hotfixes shortly after they are documented.

I would even rate ATI's drivers as better than Nvidia's which seem to be going backwards lately.

to truely comment on ATI's driver quality one needs to look back more than just a couple of years ago to see how good they are these day's....look back at the good ole 8500 and cards before that (especially early Radeon and Rage 128) and have a look at the drivers that they used...that was when ATI's driver where truely crap...but then again back in those day's Nvidia's drivers weren't much better.

I'd say driver wise, we get it pretty good these days.
