Why is it that ATI hasen't made a scaleable counterattack at Nvidia yet? It would seem an intelligent choice on their part: maybe something to consider on the X900??

Once Intel has an SLI solution you can expect to see workstations being equipped with it.
That is where the big bucks is made.

It isn't as if they can just pull this out of their a$$... If ATi really didn't have any plans to go with some sort of multi GPU configuration before nVidia announced SLI, it is going to take them a while to develop one. Rumor has it that nVidia has been working on the SLI drivers for over 2 years.

ATI had the Rage Maxx or whatever it was called (two GPUs) before Nvidia ever bought their knowledge from the 3dfx deal. It's not like it's rocket science anyhow. It's such a small market anyhow, I'm not sure either company is going to make much money from it other than bragging rights and marketing BS.

Nvidia and ATI play freeze tag. Whoever has taken the most time developing comes out way ahead of whoever released first. Then you get ATI/Nvidia fan boy wars until whoever is slacking catches up and everyone rejoices because they can all be equally lame for arguing over it now. :p

ATI will take on its main rival by introducing its multi-GPU technology in mid-2005

The multi-GPU technology from ATI will be similar to Nvidia?s Scalable Link Interface (SLI) technology, but offering additional flexibility, said the sources, noting that ATI?s multi-GPU technology will allow two different graphics cards to work as a pair without adding an additional connector for data transmission.

ATI?s forthcoming 90nm high-end graphics chip, the R520, slated for delivery in the second quarter of 2005, will also support the multi-GPU technology.
