Exactly what I've been saying. 🙂

me too

uh, three

actually i said it first 😛

and *evidently* we will see r660 in 65nm pretty soon ... can't be too long if it is on time ... r600 is at least 6 months late . ... 😉

as *soon* as AMD can get them out, i would imagine - to combat 8900 or 8800u

at least this time - unlike with the x1800, it appears they are pricing them to 'move'

The X1800 was a complete failure (if you got one when it was expensive). After the X1900 showed up, the X1800 became a completely different card because of it's drastic decay in price. That is slightly what has me worried here.

Let's say R600 finally does show up, late, but thought-out in it's design. What guarantee do we have that ATi won't release an R700 or something 3 months down the road? Going off of their history, why should we doubt that that will happen?

No guarantee I suppose, but perhaps ATi learned a little something from x1800. It would explain the incredible wait we've been put through if ATi decided to release a quality card the first time instead of releasing an overpriced stopgap. Maybe r600 is the new x1900.

Not even necessarily my opinion. Just speculation.

Well, the fact that they're naming it the 2900 doesn't leave that much room for refeshes, does it? 😕

Well, there's a point. Although, they don't have to use the same model designations as they have in the past. Heck, with ATi using HD now they have plenty of room for some more Xs on the end 😛.

2950?

Regardless as to what they may or may not call it, I'm only worried that ATi might do something like that since they've been known to do it before.

I'll just be happy if the relevent model is somewhat competitive with the 8800GTX and ends up being around $400 once supplies settle out.

If they are going to call it Radeon HD X2900 then they are probably not going to do any architecture refreshes this generation at least that is what I can gather. Or they may just head straight to R700 after the R600 who knows.

A BIG salt shaker. How did they get ahold of the Crysis demo? That's not even finished yet... :disgust:

And ATI never really quite had their own "NV30" fiasco.

lol, what was r520? (x1800xt)?

x1800xt was better than the competition in everything

hardly.. delayed, large and loud, poor yields/availability and was replaced in 2 months by something (while still loud & large) much better performing.

Doubt whether current 8800GTX owners should trade their card in for R600, to be honest.

And wheres the damn games to play with your new hardware anyway?? Consoles are the future IMHO. Piracy has all but killed PC gaming.

FPS'ers on a console = Controllers suck. And yes I own an XBox360 as well as Gears of War. My XBox is used for playing HD-DVD's and that's about it.

x1800:
Good performance, Bad timing.

The only problem I had with the x1800 series was how loud they where. ATI didn't change the cooler from the x1800 to the x1900 but people still loved those cards. It really isn't that hard to solve a loud heatsink. However, it does bother me to remove the heatsink and void the warranty. There where manufactors that provided a better heatsink.

As to size, I have a desktop for a reason - if I cared about size I would own a laptop. This generation of cards really has shown that size doesn't matter.

It was unfortunate that the card got replaced so quickly, those that bought the card before it was replaced payed the price. It really became a good card for the money when the prices dropped alot, which made it attractive to people looking for a cheap card that could do HDR+AA.

It wasn't a badly designed card. Just a badly released one.

Haha.

If you had the luxury of playing Gears of War, it wouldnt even be allowed in the same sentence as. STALKER. <---😀

Again, our gaming preferences are so different that I couldnt give two sh1ts about Oblivion.

Consoles are comforting because I know I can play any game that is released the way it was intended by the developer without sacrificing IQ... EVER. The same $399 that I spent a year ago is alive and kicking and pumping out the frames at 1080P.

I just want you to know apoppin that i thoroughly enjoy our arguments!

I was gonna let this post pass until I read that. Please try STALKER, I didn't like it in the beginning either. However, it picked up the pace and is a much more deep and engaging game then Gears ever will.

Anyway, could we get back on topic? Any R600 benchmarks leaked yet?

Alright, just for you and apoppin I bought STALKER after work tonight. I'll report back and let you know if I have been swayed.

It looks too good to be true. But ... wait a second. The same thing was being said about Conroe. Maybe AMD is going to do the same thing what Intel did to them. They could release a product that is better, faster, cheaper, ...
That would be something.

Um no. It was late, dual slot, failed to beat its competitor in OpenGL and some D3D titles,
Look at newer benchmarks and you'll see it scorches its competitor the 7800 GTX 256 MB. In fact in many case it's faster than the 7800 GTX 512 MB, the card that pretty much nobody could get.

The cooler's too loud for sure but the card performs well against its competition.

It was still too little too late.

Any card that people paid $550 for only to have it replaced by a superior card 2 months later is a failure.

It might've been late compared to a 7800 GTX but it also was the superior performer.

As for the X1900, if ATi had released it later would that mean the X1800 wasn't late?

Late to me means a card that was released after a competitor but had inferior performance.

I did mention that the X1800XT NOW performs 20~30% faster than the 7800GTX256mb than it did when it first launched.

Lol, that reminds me of another card people paid for as much as $1000 and it still got beaten in two months.

Yeah and I agree that that card was crap too 🙂
