Are you talking about SmartGart? It shows up in my advanced display properties, but all you can adjust is the AGP setting (2x,4x,8x) and fast write on/off. (makes no difference)

BTW, I have a dual-boot machine, 98SE and W2K. I run 2K primarily, and that's where I have the stuttering. This morning, just for the heck of it, I fired up 98 and tried Q3A and RTCW. Damn if they don't run PERFECTLY smooth, even with everything turned on.
2K still stutters. I'd really prefer to run most games in 2K if possible, so any help would be appreciated.

I saw your post and I tried to start the service... It replied with an error message. Is there anything else I need to do to start the ATI SMART service?

I just wanted to give my kudos to ATi on another excellent driver release. I have noticed about a 400 point improvement in my 3DMark scores and slight increases in smoothness in NWN. Also, the IQ seemed to be slightly better in 3DMark. No stability problems as of yet.

Just installed, and right off the bat I have a problem. The display setting box for direct 3d, and open gl are too small. Did anyone else get this?

Alright, first of all it is posible to get these drivers running just fine with DirectX 8.x; DirectX 9.0 is not required for normal usage. Obviously though if you want to run any DirectX 9.0 programs you will need it.

The Good
  • ]The hardlock with UT in OpenGL mode has been fixed. However when the game is loading there is a split-second pause of garbage pixels on the screen but then the game works fine. This is purely cosmetic and doesn't affect the game the least, but it would be nice to be fixed anyway.
  • Much higher minimum framerates in the UT2003 flybuy demos.

Major Problems Still Present
  • Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 3 still hardlocks although it's gotten better with these drivers. With the detail sliders on 4 I can play a few minutes before the system hardlocks and with the sliders at 5 it hardlocks almost immediately. Each time after the restart Windows informs me that the Radeon's drivers were unable to complete a drawing opereation. In particular, navigating the game menus makes the game more likely to crash. This bug annoys me the most because I still can't play this game after owning it for months and being through multiple driver releases.
  • No One Lives Forever's (original) mouse lag is still present. It's much better with this driver release but it's still unplayable. In particular it lags more when looking past specific textures and surfaces. I wish ATi QA would just load this game and try it for themselves. NOLF2 and every other DIrect3D game I have is perfect so I can't see why NOLF should be any different.

Medium Problems Still Present
  • The slowdown bug in the Memphis demo in Serious Sam introduced with the Catalyst 2.5s is still there. The minimum framerate in this demo is very poor and is around half of what the 2.4s and earlier achieved. The rest of the demos run quite well but this demo is noticeably jerky.
  • Undying still has the Start Menu partially visible in the main menu. Also the coronas in the game still have faint black borders around them. This is not an anisotropic issue like was claimed because nVidia cards run this game perfectly with full anisotropic filtering. It's not a serious bug but I'd like it fixed.

Other than that, keep up the great work guys. I can see a consistent and positive effort in getting the drivers up to scratch and it's good to see. :)

I read turning down hardware acceleration a notch helps the stuttering problem for some people with the CATs 3.0.

For those still having stuttering problems with the 03.0 Catalyst ATI drivers, you should dial down hardware acceleration a notch.
Right click your desktop, go to the settings tab, advanced, troubleshooting and move the hardware acceleration slider to the left one notch..

It fixed the issue on my machine and most of the others with the issue as well .

The stuttering stops, but now games lock up after a minute or two. I can't win.
