ATI refresh rate fix??

I just installed WinXP Pro (clean install) on my girlfriend's computer (she has the A7V133 using an ATI ALL-IN-WONDER Rage Pro 128). Everything installed without a problem. Updated the drivers to the newest betas found on the ATI website. Installed fine--drivers are properly working according to Windows...HOWEVER, when I set the refresh rate for her monitor to 85Hz through Windows, everything still looks bright...sure enough, I check what her Sony 200ES is showing her refresh rate to be and it reports 60Hz. No matter what I change the refresh rate under Windows to, the monitor stays at 60Hz.

This was not a problem and never occured before (she was running WinMe). I thought this only happens during gaming. Oh well--looked for a thread on this issue and turned up nothing--anyone know of an ATI refresh rate fix or is that still wishful thinking??

Thanks guys.

EDIT: sorry guys--I'm running the latest offical (NOT BETA) drivers: 6.13.3279

this worked for me in win2k

Search for the monitor description key in your registry. It should be under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM. The key itself begins with "Mode1" so search for that to simplify things.

*EXAMPLE*
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\...\0000\MODES\1600,1200]
"Mode1"="30.0-100.0,0.0-140.0,+,+"

Now, to set it for a minimum refresh of 75, change the first O after the comma to 75 in the "mode1" string

*EXAMPLE*
"Mode1"="30.0-100.0,75.0-140.0,+,+"

It will now use 75 for the default refresh for everything, D3D and OpenGL. You can set the minimum higher if you know what your monitor can handle.

The only downside is the key required might not exist with the "default monitor" automatically installed on some systems so update your monitor drivers if needed.

I'm have the 7500 so I'm not sure if we use the same drivers, but the 3281 drivers pretty much fix this problem, although I had to play around in the ATI Displays tab of the Display Settings. You should be able to find them at Rage3D. That will take care of the desktop refresh. To fix the refresh rate in games you will need Rage3D Tweak, also availiable at Rage3D.

3281 fixes the problem for me. you may download it from Rage3D. Also, there are many solutions to this problem you can find at the rage3d forums.

Hmm, she has the Rage 128 Pro based chip so I can't use the Radeon drivers...

Already installed the Sony drivers for her monitor.

Tried to fined that registry key but I can't. I get all the way to the class folder but can't find where to go from there. Any ideas???

This was a problem with me in Win2K and a Rage128 card, and I've gotten it to stay at what I want by changing the settings in two places:

1) Under the Windows display tab
2) In the ATI-specific tabs for monitor, and the ATI-specific tab for supported modes.

You win. That was it. I had to change the "maximum refresh rate" under the ATI properties window. I got her monitor back to 85Hz.

Thanks a lot
