As long as the Rage chipset plays fine with XP drivers, he'll be OK . . .

granted it doesn't sound like he's going to need the power but just because a system is fast does not mean its only good for games

The DVD video will look like crap. Try to get maybe a cheap ti 4200 or something at least (or whatever the PCI equivelent is). I think there is an ATI 9200 or something?

And I don't think it's overkill for the internet and stuff. My 2.4 ghz rig feels lightning fast for surfing the web compared to my moms 500 mhz PC (or just opening a window or doing anything on the PC really). That extra processing helps a lot. Then if he has a bunch of stuff going at once it's nice to have so it doesn't bog down or lock up.

Give me a f*cking break. Matching a P4 3.2 with an 8MB PCI video card. Now I've heard it all.

If you really want to cheap out on the video card, get a GeForce4 MX or Radeon 7000 or something.

First of all, those cards are like 5+ years old (and you're putting this into a newly built PC, I assume).

Second, no/crappy XP drivers exist for uber-old cards like that.

Third, ugh...! I know they suck, but a GeForce MX/Radeon 7000/9200SE/other junk really should go into a new PC. Just find the cheapest one.

Stuff like DVD playback, etc will suffer, not to mention you can't even drive 1600X1200 X 32 bit with that card (video memory limited!), etc. Unforseen consequences, like the one time they fire up any old crappy game (or perhaps a nephew/grandkid/etc tries to play a game) and it doesn't even load, and then you get the blame.

Do the words "adequate" and "balanced" mean anything to you?

Make it slower, cheaper and quieter. An AMD Sempron, lowest speed grade 2200 or somesuch, plus a mATX board with integrated-everything (VIA KM400 chipset for good media performance), 256 or 512 MBytes of DDR RAM, nice and quiet minitower case, DVDROM/CDRW combo drive or a DVD writer, quiet Samsung HDD, sorted.

SO, what I gather here. His computer will run and perform slow. This is because the video card he have in video card. Remember he have no use for 3D funtion. Its pure 2D (Aka Normal XP use)

His monitor Can't play higher then 1024*768.
second its HIS choice. His old ATI All wonder 128 Pro cannot go in AGP
Cause its AGP 2; the new MB is AGP 4 and up......
So I giving him FREE Video card
Later on he wants to buy ATI All wonder 9600 or 9800

I'd still drop in a cheaper GF4 MX or Radeon 920, maybe a refurbed Ti4200 if you can find one. GF3s are also really cheap on eBay and such as well.

OK, that'll justify the pile of RAM and the fast CPU. You should still put an AGP card in. The PCI bus being the slowest bus in the system (the legacy I/O aside), high amounts of traffic onto a PCI VGA card will use LOTS of system I/O bandwidth - even watching a DVD is often enough to make audio skip.

Note that a faster CPU doesn't help here. Some chipsets (namely those from SiS) reserve bandwidth for the integrated audio, but using an AGP card is the better cure.

i don't think you "get it" :p

The "free" card you mentioned will NOT WORK PROPERLY with XP - the drivers are NONexistant.

He will get a headache just looking at that flickering monitor . . . "Shared graphics" would be better. :Q

do him a favor and tell him he NEEDS to spend a little more money . . . he is going to BLAME you for his crappy display and wont be at all "greatful" for free crap. ;)

What kind of refresh rates does it support at 10x7?
