ATI Radeon X800 PRO vs. EVGA nVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT

which video card is better???
i want to buy a new vid card but i dont know which one
they are both $399
i always liked and USED ati but if i can get better card for the same price why not swich

I have no recommendation.
I just have 2 points.

1- ATI does not have digital vibrance.
2- You can overclock both core and memory for 2D and 3D independently on ATI. You cannot on NVIDIA. On NVIDIA, your memory clock rate is always going to be the same for 2D an 3D.

NVIDIA cards reduce their clockspeed and fanspeed in 2d.

GTs are very nice cards, but with recent driver updates, the X800 Pros are right up with the GTs in terms of performance (Except Doom3). If you can get an X800 Pro for cheaper than a GT, I'd get the X800 Pro if cost is a concern. A GT still has a better feature set though, and its 16 pipelines will probably give it more longevity than the X800 Pro's 12 pipelines.

Only core clock speed. They do not reduce the memory clock speed. You can check that using any diagnostic utility like Everest, SiSoft Sandra, etc.

I've always liked ATI in the past. Own a 9700pro, 9600xt, & 9800XT. Now I have a 6800GT. This card changed me! Go with the 6800GT- 16 pipes vs. X800's 12 pipes. Plus you get Shader 3.0 🙂 You will not be sorry.

Your second point is not entirely true. With my Gainward golden sample 6800GT, using their included software, you can overclock the core and memory independently for 2D and 3D, and with the newest version of thier software, it even gives you fan control.

OK.
May be I made a generalization that I should not have.

I know that you can set clock rates for 2D and 3D independently on most ATI cards. I consider that a must. I do not need/want to overclock my graphics card when I am typing this message!

But, with my BFG 6800OC, when I set the 3D memory clock rate, the 2D memory clock rate is automatically set to the same value. Even if the overlock utility shows a different setting, Everest diagnostic utility shows the same memory clock rate as 3D.
You may want to check it out.
You can download a free version of Everest from here.
