I bought this card for my RetailEdge combo deal (Intel P4 3.4GHz HT 800FSB + 955 mobo).
I thought this card was the 'best' deal in this sub$200 price range. Final price is $176 (ecost scams you for a surprise $5.99 handling fee while promoting FREE shipping) Anyway the $176 was still about $24 less than anywhere else I looked.

I believe the nVidia (not sure of model number) with Open GL is a better/faster card but $100+ more expensive.

Anyone else FIND a good (errr GREAT) deal on 1GB sticks of DDR2 ram?

Ps: Newegg has a decent deal on a Enermax EG475P-VE-SFMA 470W Power Supply for $83 that is suitable for this system.

(this can be purchased a tad cheaper-$78 +6SH at atacom.com but I figure Newegg might work a deal on shipping for the case/ps package)

And this is a decent ThermalTake aluminum case for $70 +16SH (for it's price point)

Best Buy has it for about the same price if you live in CA and TN (since ecost and bb charge tax in those states) using the $20 off coupon. I picked one up 2 days ago.

If you bought HL2, there's a $20 rebate in the box (includes the x700 Pro 256MB as a qualifying product).

Mine came out to: $199.99 - $20 coupon - $20MIR - $5 reward zone = $155 + tax.

I think that is a very good deal. It's not HOT, but very close. This is the best deal I've seen on this card and I wouldn't be surprised to see better deals soon (2005). If you need a video card now, this is a good opportunity.

how about $185 shipped (Free 2nd day FED EX) for a XFX GeForce 6600 GT? I believe they perform better than this card if I am not mistaken.

The x700 Pro 256MB doesn't trail the 6600GT by much in most games (except Doom3, but the x700 Pro is much faster in HL2) and has a couple of advantages:

It's very easy to connect the x700 Pro to any HDTV (the HDTV component cable adapter is even included) for high resolution output. Not everyone has DVI inputs on their HDTV.

256MB comes in handy in a couple of games.

I have both cards (XFX 6600GT and x700 Pro 256MB). Too bad I can't keep both. 🙁

I haven't read up much on PCI express cards, but why are they so much cheaper than AGP cards? Also I assume a PCI express card requires a motherboard that supports the PCI express (socket 939)?

Concerning the Reatil Edge bundle, the best deal I could find on the DDR2 RAM was a 2x512MB "kit" of super generic PC4200 at Fry's last weekend for $160. That's not much more than most low latency 1GB DDR1 kits cost. PC4200 running 4-4-4 at 533MHz is pretty much in the same performance ballpark as PC3200 at 2-2-2, right? Any benefit to underclocking the RAM PC4200 to 400Mhz and tightening up the timings to 3-3-3 (since the P4 550 is only 800MHz FSB?)

The manufacturer is Legacy Electronics. I've never heard of them, but according to their website the RAM is qualified for the 915PBL. I also figure I'm pretty safe at this point anyway because there aren't really enough different chipsets with DDR2 support for there to be major compatability problems. For them to even be able to sell it, I figure the RAM would have to at the very least work on the Intel boards.

I tried to finish my bundle on the cheap.

Found some deals last weeks at Excaliberpc.com on both PCI-E and DDR2.

Grabbed an Asus Extreme x600XT HDTV for $99. I am not a real big gamer at all, so its no biggie for me. That is a $200 card!

Also got a deal on Crucial Ballistix 512 meg 5300 stick for $99 each.

Just keep checking back on their website- daily!

Chris
