ATI Radeon + Linux. What will happen???

Suppose I install a Radeon card in my computer. When I boot Linux, there won't be a proper driver for the card - what will happen? Windows will use a generic temporarry VGA driver until the new driver is installed. Will Mandrake 7 do the same thing?

ATI's Radeon & 3D Accelerated-X (Alpha) Demo at Linux World Expo
Even with one of the ten tests run by Pro CDRS 02 not using any hardware acceleration at all, the Radeon card and 3D Accelerated-X running Linux on an AMD 700 MHz machine beat the nVidia GeForce on NT with an 866 MHz PIII (weighted average). With nVidia's own drivers. Kinda fun. It's 3D Accelerated-X was v2.0 Alpha code, though, so it will only get better. (SGI told us at the show that the numbers for GeForce on Linux were not available as yet). Do you believe 50 MegaPixels rate for GL_Draw_Pixels? Yup. That's 3D Accelerated-X.

Damn that looks sweet, but coming from radeonUltra, I don't know if I trust it.

KarsinTheHutt - I don't know, but I would guess no. Linux was a pain in the ass with my Banshee till I loaded up a special driver for it.. But then again I'm just not used to the Linux environment, if you think about it, it's the same thing with Windows, you start with a crap driver and load your own...

I don't know if there would be a specialized Radeon driver for Linux.. Just look around, hopefully you'll be in luck.
