ATI Radeon LE from Newegg is Now at $77.00 Shipped - Amazing!

I know this has been posted before, but it's been a while so I thought I'd make a new post for those who are interested. I gave in after the price finally dropped below $80, and newegg still offers free fedex shipping!

I'm sure everyone knows by now but this card can be tweaked to a regular Radeon by registry hacks and a bit overclocking.

ATI Radeon LE from Newegg

Now I'm ducking under the covers for the flames...

Death! Death to Fishmonger!!

Why? No reason -- hey, this is the Internet.

;^>

Okay, okay, a serious question :^> : is it confirmed that activating HyperZ and a bit of clocking work in ALL Radeon LEs?

I remember some expert saying he couldn't get HyperZ to go on -his- LE, despite trying everything.

In any event, these ARE amazing deals. Thanks, Fishmonger!

No flames here. As long as you don't claim you were the first to see this...😉
It's like buying a stick of memory these days, the price just keeps dropping! You think you've waited long enough and buy and then the next week it goes down again! This is getting tempting but how low can it go? I'm pretty happy with my V3 2k for now, but this is getting me itchy...

I've seen this card offered as a HOT DEAL so much, I'm tempted to buy. However, why buy this card when it appears that GeForce 2 (soon 3) is the de facto standard? Price alone? What advantages does this card offer over a GeForce 2 MX? Will it still be viable in a year? Are the drivers any good? Are they frequently updated?

Sorry for the stream of consciousness thing.

This card is a great deal - clocked to 190MHz, I can play Quake3 arena smoothly at 1600x1200 w/all quality settings except 16 bit textures.

The Radeon is inferior to the Geforce2 MX in 16-bit color fps, but superior with 32-bit color.

Of course, with an LE, performance may be a bit lower, depending on whether or not one successfully reactivates HyperZ and ups the clock a bit.

I know this particular deal lacks TV-out -- but does anyone know if all the Radeons with TV-out have fairly high quality TV-out? (I've heard that the Radeon AIWs do, but it's too easy to imagine that the TV-out in the others is the typical cheap, shallow color-depth stuff... :^[ )

The Radeon is pretty much better than the MX in every way possible, except for low res/16 bit performance. 2d, 3d image quality, price, performance, etc. are all better on the Radeon, assuming you hack it to a regular Radeon 32 MB.

Does HyperZ on the LE work -even with OpenGL-?

I've read a few places that it doesn't, but I thought I'd check with those here who know more than I. (Which is basically all of you, I guess. :^> )

That review system is so bad. I just rated the product 10 times, it didn't even ask me if i bought it or not. I wouldn't trust those reviews at all.

I also just saw the Guillemot 3D Prophet II MX board there for $85. It's OEM, but what hardcore gamer needs a demo CD with his new video card?

I ordered one, but then again, I don't need a ton of gaming power... just enough to get me by for about 9 mos.

Cheers 😀

The Radeon LE with TV out uses the actual Rage Theatre chip, so the quality is quite good. Much better than the Geforce2MX TV-out quality IMHO. I just received my Radeon LE with TV, and after using the DirectX 8.0 trick, it works pretty well.

Can you just confirm this for me .. you are saying that you bought one of these Newegg Radeon LE's with TV-out and the actualy Tv-encoder chip on the board itself (read, you actually looked at the board and saw a chip that says Rage Theater in some sort of white nonpainted lettering) is a Rage Theater chip ?

Is the only difference between this OEM and the retail version of this card software, or are there hardware differences too?

Izpoof, Wolfgang -

That is correct, the TV-encoder chip type is Rage Theatre, and it says so on the chip itself. I had a Geforce2 MX by MSI which had the best TV-out of any Geforce2 MX I've used, and the Radeon output is still superior.

note:
the OEM 3d Prophet mx is clocked at 166MHz for its
slower memory than the retail one, which has a 5.5ns
faster memory (clocked at 183MHZ)

anyway, Newegg has super cheap but good video cards.
(the cheapest 3d Prophet mx OEM is $83 by pricewatch)

Ok, if ALL LE models come with HyperZ why does the description on the newegg site say the 77.00 dollar model does NOT have it?

<< Ok, if ALL LE models come with HyperZ why does the description on the newegg site say the 77.00 dollar model does NOT >>

its becuase you have to hack the drivers before you can get it to work, it is just disabled with software.

Well in that case, I just bought one. I've been looking for a deal on a good video card and I couldn't quite see the point in paying 83 dollars for one. But 77 is probably as good as it's gonna get for awhile, and I'm so tired of not being able to play Quake 3 at all on the 4mb onboard ATI i've got.

Payed 84$ and 81$ for two of these (each) Best $$ Ive spent on a vid card ever. Nice performance, great price..
