I was going by the overall increase and I dont consider 30-40% or even 50% overall to be much of an upgrade from a 5 year old card. after 5 years he should be looking at getting way more than double the overall performance imo.

not exactly, if 5 years ago he was buying more expensive hardware, and the CPU was a lot better for the time.

just as a reference how the 4890 looked on BF3...
in games like this I would expect the 260x to perform over 2.5x

I swear you're talking about upgrading a different system every other post... :p
LOL. I have "a bunch of" rigs.

My IB and SB i3 3.4Ghz are going to be my new "main" rigs (I think... I'm now not so certain that the Q9300 @ 3.0 is slower for DC.) My older "main" rigs were my Q9300 @ 3.0 quad-cores.

I would, however, like to upgrade them all with some / newer GPUs.

(The IB i3-3240 rig has a 1GB GDDR5 7790 card in it currently, which plays vanilla Skyrim quite nicely, I might add.)

he has a quad core though not dual core

Thanks for correcting. This makes a world of difference.

First off, thanks to all of you for the feedback, I truly appreciate it.

Crazzy, would you be willing to point me to a few links on New Egg for your recommendations? I'm just a little in the dark here ;)

With a Quad core & ~$200 budget, i'd suggest you to go for AMD280 (It's a renamed 7950) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-099-_-Product

$189.99 after $20.00 rebate card

Beast of a Card.

The $90 7850 that EliteRetard posted would be an adequate replacement for a 4890. However, with an AMD280 , you can turn the eye candy on. Also, can keep this card even if you upgrade your system in the future. Plenty of headroom for OC'ing

First off, thank you to everyone who took the time to chime in. I really appreciate it.

So I decided to roll with and ASUS Radeon 270x, and holy shit what a difference it makes. I think I might had overpaid a tad, but I'm sure there are several cards that would have fit the bill.

As a litmus test, I decided to try and run Far Cry 3 which my old card could barely run stuff on medium. The 270x can run the game on Ultra without breaking a sweat. The same goes for the 2013 Tomb Raider. It's like a brand new computer.

The only drawback is that the card is really long so I'm going to shuffle the guts of my computer a bit because the GPU is going into my current hard drive bay.

Thanks for the input crazzy. I ddn't see your post in time, but I went with the AMD 270x (which I'm really happy with) which I think is pretty similar to the 280, no?

Performance wise it's ~20% slower, the 270/x is based on the 78xx cards (pitcairn) while the 280/x is based off the 79xx cards (tahiti), and there's quite a bit of hardware difference.

Congratulations on your purchase.

270x is 1280 Stream Processor, 2GB, 256-bit memory card.
280 is 1792 Stream Processor, 3GB, 384-bit memory.

However, 270x is all you need for 1080p. It'll keep you happy with your current system and monitor. You could probably do a full system upgrade when you choose to upgrade your monitor to 1440p or 1600p or even 4K..

You might have a mid-tower case if you're trying to fit this card by removing the HDD bay. 280 is even longer than 270x, i think, which would have made things a bit more difficult..
