I have a P4 2.4b, 512+256mb 2700 sticks, i never overclock anything, dont think a 5fps gain is worth the risk

im looking at a ATI Radeon 9600pro 256mb.

The main game im looking to play is HL2, hopefully the new splinter cell game, but most of the time im playing EA Sports games which arent as demanding

what kind of FPS will i get in HL2 if i run it at 1280x1024 with low AA and AF to get rid of most of the jaggies?

I would set my sights a little higher...unless the price is dirt cheap. I have a 9600XT and I want more juice...I just don't think the 9600 series can do more then 8x6 in that game.

Stay away from that 9600 Pro 256 MB.

The 128 MB version will be just as good, possibly actually better, since those with 256 MB often use slower memory.

Better yet would be a 9800 Pro if you can afford it, or just a bit more yet would be the 6600GT.

If budget is a really big concern, just go with the 9600 Pro 128 MB, or maybe a 6600.

aiite cool, im looking for $100 and under hopefully, but if needed i can go to $140

How much should the 9600 pro / 6600 be?

And what kind of FPS would i get in HL 2 (main reason im looking for upgrades) in 1280x1024 or 1024x760 or wtvr

This sapphire would be a good 9600pro to get.

Looks like this one is the same card, but it doesn't list the mem/core clock specs so I'm not sure.

9600pro is a good card to get in the $100 range.

Another thing to consider might be a used 9700/9800pro. They tend to go for right around the $125 range.

Looks like an AGP 6600 with 128-bit memory interface would run you about $130

9800pro is the next card I'd look at.

Iono what price they should be since i'm not from teh US...check out Newegg for averages i guess.

As for fps gained, it's hard to say.

Your CPU is going to hold back the game alot, but it will certainly be much more playable with a 9800 Pro or 6600 GT, or even 9600 Pro i would assume.

I was using the 9600 for CSS while i was waiting for X800 XL to come out and i had to go and buy the 6600GT its a much better card then the 9800 pro and i was able to find it for 180 bucks. Go for the 6600GT i was able to get a used one on e-bay for 120 as well for SLI but it ended up being AGP and they refunded me. It would have been perfect for you. :D

HL2 Performance

Wow! $114 for a new 9700Pro is a great deal. Don't bother with the 9600 series. It will be the same speed as the card you already have. The 9700Pro would be a true upgrade. Its definately more bang for the buck.

The 256MB versions of the 9600 Pro run the memory at lower speed. I recently purchased one for a friend a NewEgg. The description listed the memory speed at 400 MHz, but it actually ran at 300 MHz, and could only go to 320 MHz using ATI Tool. I was pretty mad! Get the 128 MB version if you want, but it won't be much faster than your current card.
