I had a rather interesting experience at Circuit City today, so I decided to share..

I walked into Circuit City and made my way back to the graphics card area. The 9600xt's were all behind the anti-theft locking glass display meaning that I would have to locate a manager to get one. I strolled around for a minute or two and eventually bumped back into Richard (Richard, if you are reading this I have 3 words for you "You Da Man"), the store manager. This is when I knew things would get ugly.

Richard is your stereotypical Circuit City store manager. His is 30-something, balding and what I would clearly label as a corporate tool. I had a previous unfavorable run-in with this particular manager a week back when I was trying to price match a Local Fry's Electronics store to get a Western Digital 120GB drive for $4.00 AR. I had my doubts about this guy but in the end things worked out fine.

The first thing he did was mock me when I asked him to open up the glass cage so that I could purchase the graphics card. Right off the bat, strike 1 Richard. I passed it off and decided that this guy is probably so tooled out from wasting his life away at a dead end job that he must be going senile. Then I asked him to price match Central Computer's price of $185.95, a mere 5 dollars off the Circuit City price. He started giving me crap by saying that Circuit City does not match online retailers. I launched my rebuttal by stating that Central Computer is located 10 miles away from Circuit City and is a very real brick and mortar store. Finally he just gave in and decided to give me $10.00 off. I thanked him by saying "Even better!" This is when things got really hilarious.

The receipts started printing out and the paper ran out. This meant that he would have to change the paper and reprint the receipt. This was obviously not Richard's day. He fought with that machine for a good 5 minutes, while papers and things on the counter fell off onto the floor, while I stood there trying to hold my laughter.

30 minutes later I was finally out the door. Just before I left the store I told Richard "You Da Man!"

As always YMMV especially with Circuit City as these days they are trying to find any and every excuse to deny price matches.

Word. Given the fact that a 9700 can be had for 10 bucks more..there is no reason not to pony up 10 more bucks for a card that's WAY better than any 9600.

That is a very good point.

My 9600xt that I just picked up today came with a voucher for half life 2 (when it comes out). I figure its about a $40 value making the card price around $100 after rebate / game.

ummm....yeah, the HL2 coupon is nice and all, but the point is that 9600xt is kinda out-of-date y'know, and very soon will need replacement , for example when you start playing at 1280x1024 resolution, which will pretty much be the default soon enough, when everyone have their LCDs. ATI and graphics cards manufacturers know this of course, and all these deals are just their way of trying to squeeze every last drop of profits from this dying product. I feel that 9700/9800 still have life left in them for the next couple of years, seeing as they can run most games with med to high quality even at 1280x1024, and every game at 1024x768 at high-highest quality.

good luck trying to play HL2 on this thing....
