ATI Radeon 8500 driver problem

Hey guys, I don't post much, but I just ran into a problem. I just installed the latest catalyst drivers (3.1), and I previously had the 2.5 running fine on my win2k/nforce2/radeon8500 system. I didn't read the instructions and just intsalled it over the old ones. When it came back up, the video was terribly slow and quake3 wouldn't start (said GL subsystem not available).

Afterwards, I noticed I still had an older version of directX, so I just installed DX9.0. That didn't help, so I un-installed the drivers and installed the catalyst 2.5 again. That also didn't help, so I went through these instructions to completely remove and re-install the ATI drivers: http://www.rage3d.com/board/showthread.php?s=&threadid=33656771

It's back up with the new drivers now, but I still have all of the same problems (video slow, GL won't work). The only other thing I can think of to try is to follow those instructions, but re-install the 2.5 catalyst drivers.

Does anyone else have a suggestion?

I've used driver cleaner to uninstall ati and nvidia drivers. You can get it from here driver cleaner
If that doesn't help then a format should fix it. I had to format going from nvidia to ati. I got all kind of weird errors.
 
You did the same thing I did. Installed DX9 without a DX9 supporting board. 🙁 You'll have to reinstall windows to get rid of it. DX9 is evil. 🙁
 
Actually, my R8500 responded normally to DX9. When installing new Cats, you should properly uninstall the old ones (2.5s in this case). First time I upgraded from 3.0 to 3.0a, one on top of the other, my performance decreased. When I moved from the 3.0a to 3.1, I sniffed through all those old ATI reg. entries, got rid of em..and then installed. Like a new machine! Almost 🙂 Still..Driver Cleaner should do the job. Upgrading drivers is such a pain in the #$%. :frown:
 
Thanks for the help, guys. That driver cleaner did the job. It doesn't look like it did anything actually (said all of the files it was looking for wasn't found), but the drivers installed flawlessly after running it.

Also, I don't think directx9 caused any problems. It's working fine with it installed.. but then again, the only game I've tested was Quake3.
