Those extended warranties
can be good on some products but are a waste on most. One of the best instances of those warranties is for hard drives with an already long warranty. The extended warranty starts when the first one ends so if during the sixth year of ownership a Maxtor drive fails (used to be five years anyway), it will be replaced
by whatever they have available for approximately the same price point. Think about that for a second. You paid $200 for a 1GB hard drive and now it is replaced by a 10-15GB drive. Not too shabby for $10. I'm referring to CompUSA's warranty which is what I am most familiar with.
It's usually a matter of luck, but it can work out in your favor. On really high priced items with questionable longevity, such as the Wega mentioned, it might be a good idea because you are already spending a boatload for the unit. It's insurance that may or may not pan out as needed. I generally don't get them and trust my chances. It also serves as an excuse to upgrade if it dies out of warranty (which is important when you're married!).
