Keep in mind the Radeon line is about to get a memory clock upgrade very soon, but the 64 VIVO kicks ass in 32 bit color at high resolutions.

what do u mean by memory clock upgrade, you mean they are releasing another card or there is some sort of software update for current radeons that increases the memory clock?

Were any of you guys able to get the $30 off $150 coupon to work? I called the customer service number and the guy there told me that it was only for business use or something. He gave me the $10 off for new customers... This sucks, it came out to $177 or something

So, call back and give a business name. Become a dot.com in the making, or something. Use some imagination. Did you try something like that?

Good price for the VIVO. Don't even consider ATI's "trade-up" program. It's the same price as every other vendor out there (187), and though it does include a $30 rebate in the box, just like the other retail boxes, you also have to send them your current video card. So basically you fill out a special form and give them your video card for the priviledge of buying the card at the same price you could buy it anywhere else.

I'm thinking that 157 after rebate wouldn't be bad at all if you sell your current card on *bay. I've got a strictly-business G400 16MB from Matrox that should bring $50 or more. So I'd get the Radeon 64 for just over 100 bucks? Hmmm.. not bad.

Where else can you get the card for $155? This buy.com coupon is dead for normal customers and the rebate doesn't apply to Buy.com. Try buying it anywhere else that the rebate is good for and your price is going to be above $200. And I don't know about you but I have been looking fo a way to get some use out of this POS 1mb isa vid card I have laying around. Hell I even have a 512kb VESA bus card here that I am going to send them.

ElectricIce:

Wow, nice system. Did you put that together yourself? Do you use Win2K to choose which drive to boot to? As for the card, yes, Radeon 64 is definately one of the best cards out there.

The other contenders are Geforce2 GTS in regular, PRO, and Ultra models, and Voodoo 5500. The Voodoo is apparently a little less impressive than the GeForce and Radeon cards, although I don't own one myself and base that on reviews and opinions of others. Geforce is a bit faster than Radeon in the Pro and especially the Ultra models, but you'll pay big time for those.

There's a big argument about whether the Radeon has better overall picture quality or not, many Radeon owners say so but then Geforce advocates say it's their imagination and they're just trying to counteract the GTS's higher framerates. Geforce (Nvidia) has a better history of updating their drivers and thus getting the most out of their video cards than Radeon (ATI) does, though ATI apparently promises to be more aggressive about driver updates in the future.

Some people who own both cards claim they are both absolutely tremendous and you can't tell a difference in performance at all. Personally I lean toward the Radeon, and if I see ATI starting to come through with the driver suppor they've promised I'll get one.

csaddict:

I must have misunderstood. I thought this $30 in-box coupon was still good. If not, you're right. I could send them my 2MB PCI Matrox card and then sell the G400 and still come out for about $100 bucks.

Hate to give up that vanilla PCI card though. Thing's worth it's weight in gold when you run into trouble installing a new video card. If you have prolonged problems and really need to use your system, it's nice to know you can always slap that little PCI card back in there and use it until you get the other problems fixed. Hmmm... tough call.

Electrice, the thing you need to find out about is whether the Win2k driver issues have been solved for Athlon/Via owners.

Most (all?) of those issues were in running 3D games. New drivers are supposed to be good. But I haven't nailed it down yet.

Radeons are supposed to be significantly better in higher resolutions in 2D than Geforce's are. If you don't care about 3D at all, then the Matrox 450 is generally said to be the best video card with the fewest problems.

There is a quadro version of the Geforce2 which is supposed to be the highest performing video card for some high end professional graphics applications. That sounds like it might apply to you. I don't know much about that. But I do know there is a way of hacking the Geforce2 cards to give you a quadro card. Requires a bit of soldering iron work though. You have to move to resistors I think.

i need the ability to do fast 3d rendering i like to make little 3-d characters for fun kinda like cartoon characters. i was looking at the gforce ultra but it looks like its entierly for gmaers and not for the quick high quality still renderings

I think you should ask advice on some forum that knows about that sort of work. I.e., a forum more oriented towards 3D rendering, than PC hardware.
