ATI Radeon 4790

So a 512mb underclocked 4890. As if ATI didn't have enough really good offerings in the <$200 segments 😀

Perhaps it's a way of selling chips that don't perform at stock 4890 levels? I honestly have no idea.

I like ATi but this is starting to feel like too many cards.

Yes, because they can't sell them as 4850s or 4870s as it is a different core with a different transistor count.

Yes. Maybe it's a way of clearing out the stocks. But this card affects the sales for both 4850 and 4870. Weird presence on the market.😕

It's possible that these might be very overclockable out of the box or with some minor voltage adjustments. It'd be extremely awesome if they could take these and make them run like 512MB 4890s. These have a bit lower gpu clock than the 4850, but they do have the full GDDR5 that the 4850 doesn't have. I'd take one of these over a 4850, but I probably wouldn't return a 4850 to get one if I already had one.

that spells suck as in:

suck the money out of the consumers
ATI sucks for doing that
and just suck

Why such a strong reaction? Sure, it seems pointless to me, but that's about it. It's not like they're increasing prices or forcing anyone to buy this card.

I think they are just looking to replace their current gen lineup with the newer more power efficient GPUs, seems like the logical thing to do is to only produce the better quality chips and replace the less efficient ones.

I however want to see the previews on the next gen dammit!

Ding ding ding, we have a winner. It's been a year since the 4xxx series debuted. Out with the old and in with the new. The 4890 is going to be their high-end until the 5xxx series debuts. These 4790 cards will take the chips the don't make the 4890 cut. And then in the lower end you'll have the 4770's which also had the benefit of being a prototype for the 40nm process. Seems pretty clear to me.

Anyway, I'd be interested in seeing how it overclocks 😀.

Yah! Another promising card they won't be able to produce in sufficient quantities thanks to yield issues.

That's worse than a rebadge.

No it isn't, it's much better. What the heck do you think the GTX 260 and 275 are? Why you're still allowed on these forums despite being the most obvious troll in years is beyond me.

It's not 40nm so yield issues may not be a problem.

Please...let's not let this thread go south. I'm sure it was a joke.

@ 55nm I bet they can make as many of these as they want. AND...@ 55nm, I'd also bet that there aren't THAT many 4890 "rejects". Pretty mature process for them at this point.

These could be really good for cheap..........

Just like the 9600GSO, a G92 8800GT/9800GT reject. Funny, I don't recall you complaining about the 9600GSO cards. Bias much?

Guys/gals I know Wreckage's comment was unnecessary (more intended jokingly I think)...but please let's keep the thread OT.

If his comment was made jokingly, than I do apologize. But knowing his hatred for anything non-Nvidia it's pretty easy to take his posts the wrong way, assuming it was a sarcastic post.

As far as the actual card, it has the possibility to be exciting if it sells near 4850 prices and overclocks to 4890 levels, or with votage tweaks well beyond. I think we'd all be pretty floored if this thing is $100 or less and can hit ~900MHz speeds. GTX280+ speeds for that low of a price... <drool> I'm getting ahead of things, we'll have to see how things play out I guess.
