Apparently ATi r520 or should i say x1800 is coming out on 5th october according to vr-zone.
ATI r520
"ATi will be unveiling R520 officially on October 5th but we do not expect mass production of the cards till end of Oct. So far we heard only 1K of such cards produced for customers qualifications and reviews. Yield rate for 16ps and 24ps R520 is under 25%. "
Not sure if article is 100% accurate but if yield is under 25% does that mean 75% is thrown away? ATI would be losing heaps of money if this is the case.
Translation: Mass production wont start until end of oct which means mid December before we see decent volume in the channel. And that is the best scenario.
Pretty damn pathetic if you ask me.
QFT, that's almost a full 6 months behind Nvidia's full production launch, that's a lifetime in terms of videocards for equivalent tech, and that's also assuming that the X1800 is competitive with the 7800 line, which lately seems questionable. Plus if there's any truth to those yields ATI will have to jack up the price or they will be losing their shirts. This is a lose-lose situation for consumers and the industry.
Edit - Just read on TheInq that the
1800XT will be a 512mb part, interesting.
