For the first time since I bought Ati stock in mid July, I'm actually making money on it right now. It must be getting really close to a release, but we still dont know if it's a paper launch or not. October 5th seems really close, though, I'd be surprised if it were actually available that day.

looks more like they were selling chipsets to gain market share. they may have been selling low end chips at a loss to maintain market share. though, with how old the radeon 9550 architecture is you'd think selling those for just about anything would be well above their marginal cost

Yeah, it's really too bad. It look as though ATI went for the gusto with a 32 pipeline card on a 512-bit bus, but they fell short on both fronts. It will probably pay off for them in the end once yields improve. Sounds to me like they went for too small a nanometre size...I remember that the 9700Pro had great yields compared to NV30 because of better yields using older proven technology.

Just out of curiousity, how can they produce the Xbox 360 GPUs without issue when they are very similar and have 24 pipelines? It just doesn't make sense.

Translation: Mass production wont start until end of oct which means mid December before we see decent volume in the channel. And that is the best scenario.

Pretty damn pathetic if you ask me.

QFT, that's almost a full 6 months behind Nvidia's full production launch, that's a lifetime in terms of videocards for equivalent tech, and that's also assuming that the X1800 is competitive with the 7800 line, which lately seems questionable. Plus if there's any truth to those yields ATI will have to jack up the price or they will be losing their shirts. This is a lose-lose situation for consumers and the industry.

Edit - Just read on TheInq that the 1800XT will be a 512mb part, interesting.

They actually have 48 unified pipes(360) but that is a good question...I wish I could get my hands on 2 of the 32 piped R520's(read there was 10 of em') for Xfire...hmmm....I'll start saving

Until we actually see the performance of the cards we don't know that for sure.

We need to know the timeframe too to find out if they are even going to be present for this generation. It has happened before on both sides- most recently nV skipping a refresh to go head to head with the X850XT. It is possible that ATi is aiming to hit the market targetting the 7900, 7600 and 7200 instead of the 7800, 6600 and 6200. IF the talk of volume shipments coming in December have any validity then I would assume that is what they would be doing.

AFAIK, Ati only designed the xbox360 gpu, they're not responsible for manufacturing it. M$ buys the design, and can produce it wherever and however they want, cutting in Ati on the share of profits for every unit sold.

Plus, something tells me all the "smart" people at Ati were busy designing the xbox360 gpu, so that left only a bunch of "n00bs" to design the r520.

Well seeing how late ATi is with this part, it better blow away the 7800 GTX - would be embarassing for them if it doesn't. Also the XF (crossfire) system of requiring a master card sucks, they should have incorporated the XF circuitry on all cards rather than a select few which may be hard to come by.
