ATI R390 before R400 or R500?

Quoted from my fav newsletter:

Before we see R400, ATI may surprise us with what is being called R390, code named 'Loci.' From what we've heard thus far, the re-spun R350-successor is slated to be significantly faster than the RADEON 9800 Pro and even NVIDIA's freshly unveiled NV35. It won't be etched on a .13-micron process and it will almost certainly sport a very similar feature-set as the R350. When can we expect to hear more? Some time in the summer, apparently.

Any other news on the R390?

This info has been going around rage3d.com for a while now. Yes, it will be faster than NV35, so that's all that matters to me :)

I hope it can come out in 3 weeks because I'll be ordering my next system then so price drops are always nice!

It would be nice to see a price drop on the 9800, because in about 4 and a half weeks time I will be ordering my new system.

I dont know a date when the R390 is due out though, anyone?

doubtful. the nv35 might be on store shelves by then, i wouldn't expect ATi to release the 9800 successor until they can eclipse something nvidia is doing

Man, this is rediculous if it's true. Nobody cares about who's got the 1-2% performance lead, so stop putting out a new "world's fastest graphics processor" every few months. Please, just hold off, 5900 and 9800 are fast enough for now. Put all those minds to work on the future.

I disagree. If ATi can continue to answer nVidia like they are doing, they are sending the strong message to NVDA that things won't be as easy for them competition wise as they use to be.

Competition is good.
If ATi release a new chipset soon, then it'll mean things like the 9700's/9600's/9800's all will drop in price.

It might also lead to nVidia drops.

And ATi regaining the lead all the time is fun :) Go ATi.

IIRC, R390 aka Loci is was R400 used to be. There is no R400 anymore. Sure, there will be things after that (R420?), but "R400" is gone.

Where did you get that from?

According to my source ATI is still continuing with R400, but they are focusing on R500 mainly. R400 is still going to happen...."Apparently".

I would be interested to know where you received that information from.

Rage3d.com. I wouldn't rely on your source because he is apparently out of the loop :) :brokenheart:

AFAIK the next ATi chip to be shipped is R360, a respun R350 with higher clocks, probably something around 425/450. Just enough to take back the lead ;) And we'll be hearing more about it in June. Loci/R390/R420 is/are the NV40 Killer(s), so don't expect too much more about them until near year's end.

How about a R300 MAXX? The chips should be cheap enough to produce now to make dual-core cards feasible price wise.

More cards, more cards.. woot!

The way I see it, the more rediculously fast cards these companies put out, while their "older" cards like the 9700 Pro can run everything, the better. Just means the prices on their older cards drop, cause there's something new that gives 4 more FPS in UT2K3 and bragging rights to the fastest card around. :)

I think having the fastest product out there makes a difference. Even if it is a few FPS it affects sales of cheaper hardware. I know many people who heard that the Radeon 9700PRO was the fastest card (this is before 5900FX and the 98000pro) but they were budget gamers so they got the 9000PRO thinking it was faster than the Geforce4MX (though they were right in that guess)

But people tend to think of products proportionally...so if the 5900FX is the fastest card, then the 5600FX must be faster than the 9600PRO (not even sure if that is true or not but the point is that is how customers think)

If anyone wants to elaborate and say what I said in a coherent manner go right ahead ;)

and yes! More videocards = more price drops which is good all around!

Could you imagine the power consumption of such a card? It would need it's own power supply! ;)

I wonder if the cool-running, low-power 9600 chips can be "stacked"? Kind of self-defeating I suppose... why get 2x 9600's when you could get ONE 9800? [shrug]

I just wonder if it's possible...

Not neccesarily, not all the power gets shot straight into the card's core you know, there are other things like memory :p
