ati opengl and mahaa

i recently bought an ati 4870 and like it very much. however the only drivers that have opengl support are the 8.6 that came with the cd. 8.7 and 8.8 dont work as they drop the game back to the desktop. so i say ok this is fine for now, cod4 and others work great.
however now i find that netflix instant movies wont play due to drm something or other. i call netflix and they say only cats 8.7 and above support instant play. just venting here. i always heard of ati bad driver support. honestly never had to worry bout anything with nvidia 7900gt.
im a value guy not a fanboy.
any thoughts or tips on this?

Yeah, have NetFlix ship you the DVD's. Downloading movies sucks-- the quality sucks, I mean.

i do have them shipped regularly. instant movies are streamed with excellant quality and they are free. library selection is limited but still thousands to choose from.
i am more upset over mohaa not playing in 8.7 cats and above due to dropped opengl support.
why will mohaa play with 8.6 but not 8.7 or 8.8?

Have you visited the game's website to see if others are having the same problem? You do have the game's latest patch, right?

You are talking Medal Of Honor, Allied Assault?

i do not have it but i do have Pacific Assault. Would it have the same problem? i have Cat 8.8 and i can install it and try

i have all reative patches installed and have been playing the game for years in multiplayer.
i recently took out my nvidia 7900 gt and installed ati 4870.
8.6 cats on cd work fine. 8.7 and 8.8 drivers crash to desktop.
i have 8.6 in now and game functions properly.
i use driver cleaner pro after uninstall of drivers
vista 64 bit
e6600
asus p5b latest bios 1236 i believe
4 gig ram
wd 74 raptor
creative xfi
antec p180

actually i have to no avail.
i have searched quite extensively and have come up empty.
an overall summary of what i have learned is its an opengl support problem with ati.
it just puzzles me why 8.6 cats support opengl and latest cats wont.
all the latest nvidia drivers have no problem with opengl.
i realize opengl is old school but is hanging in there for the most part.

downloaded and installed 8.6 cats and ccc.
game works fine.
thought maybe it had to do with something added to manufacturers cd.

OGL is screwed up .. it's pretty official; evidently 8.9 will fix it

opengl is all coming to light now. wish i would have known this before i jumped on the 4870. excellent card.
nvidia has no problem with opengl. bummer for those who enjoy older games.
will wait and hope 8.9 cats address problem.

i post at B3D also and one of my sources of everything "anti-AMD" made me aware of the issue with the fur benchmark - something is broken and i'd say they know and will fix it - they have to.

well, not really .. i have GTX280 coming this week so i can still play OGL games with the latest drivers.

Allied Assault works perfectly for me on Cat 8.8 but neither Spearhead or Breakthrough do. I'm just preparing to submit a bug report to ATi and the issue is included in it.

I'd bet this is the extension string problem again so renaming the expansion executables to Allied Assault should work.

It really does work, just be clear and professional when you report your problems.

Just be happy the latest WHQL drivers actually work for your card.

I am still waiting on nVidia to fix their WHQL drivers for their 7900GT/GTO series cards (been broken since 174.74 beta's). They also know about it too (courtesy of me). I'm not in a hurry for them but it would be nice that if they WHQL their drivers for a set series they actually make sure it works.

8.9 has the same issue with the expansions.

8.9 still has fan issues with 4870x2 .. i almost lost her last night when the temps shot way up with CrossfireX-3 - 65C for a case temp!! :|

Can you rename the extension strings to get it to work? Anyone posted a workaround?

You don't rename it, you trim it. With nVidia you can edit the value directly but on ATi you can do it indirectly by renaming the executable to one that already has it trimmed, like Quake 3 for example.

MOHAA works perfectly for me on my 4850 so I don?t think the extension string is the cause of his problem.
