Sorry this is my 2nd post about a video card suggestion but I had another thought I need some help on. Should I make my move to go get myself an XFX HD5870 or wait for Fermi?

When do you need to buy a video card? There is still no official word as to the availability of Fermi.

If you are in no hurry, you might as well wait. One or both of these things might happen:
1.) You wait long enough and see that 5xxx prices go down
2.) You wait long enough and see Fermi released.

If both happens, you would be in a better position to judge for yourself.

If only either one happens, then you are still good.

Of course, if you need a card now, that 5870 isn't bad at all.

I think I will wait since I need an Nvidia card. ATI has problems with CS:S, Nvidia does not. With ATI I can only play in DX 8.1 and its almost 2010 and this problem still has not been resolved, too much fog and lights are messed in certain maps.

I think you're crazy. I've played CS:S on 3 different ATI cards (9200, x1300, 4850) and I've never had any problems.

If I were the one thinking about buying today, if one of the 58x0 cards fit my budget I'd pull the trigger. On the other hand, if one of Nvidia's unique features interests you then it woudl make sense to wait.

And as others have said, I don't know about any issues with AMD on CS:S. I don't play it, but my buddy played it for quite a while, he has my old Radeon 2900Pro... no problems.

CS:S in DirectX 9.0 with an ATI card : http://i33.tinypic.com/9telua.jpg
CS:S in DirectX 8.1 with an ATI card : http://i33.tinypic.com/34e8a2q.jpg

In the second link, the image is much more clear and doesn't have the lighting problem with Nvidia cards in DX9. I have read on various forums that a lot of people are having this problem. If someone could link me to a place where it says an ATI driver has fixed this issue, I thank you, if not, here is the problem.

@TheMeanestGuest, I am not crazy, look at other forums and look at these images.

Well, I know in your last thread you used dust_2 as an example of what you heard (tunnels being dark), so I took a screenshot for you.

Taken at 2560x1600, 16xaf, 8x csaa, directx9, everything on high. Running a Radeon 5970 with catalyst 9.12 drivers. Looks fine to me.

That is good to know. Now if only de_nuke did not have this problem. Could you check A bombsite on nuke for me? Looking at the skylights and stuff. If you can, thanks a lot!

You can disable these things by turning down your graphics and setting a dxlevel of 8.1 no matter what card you have.

Furthermore, certain things can be tuned by using an autoexec.cfg

On a 8800GTS

with autoexec:

Playing on DX 8.1 wont look so great haha.

My really old PC plays L4D2 on medium-low compared to maxed-out on my current rig. Frankly speaking, you wouldn't really notice the difference in graphical quality if you are deeply engrossed playing the game and if the framerate is good enough.
