ATI/NVidia/CPU transcoding quality comparison

Well, from AMD's site, only three apps are supported under Stream.

Accelerate your digital home entertainment with ATI Stream Technology

Cyberlink Media Show Expresso
ArcSoft?s TotalMedia Theatre
Power Director 7

Also listed is Cyberlinks Power Director 7, but I think this is primarily used for "capturing, editing and distributing HD video"

The problem is finding apps that support both CUDA and Stream. Seems ATI is limited to three apps (Power Director 7 can be configured for encoding) at the moment (unless they are not listed on AMD's page for some reason).

It looks like ArcSofts Total Media Theatre 3 has CUDA support and Stream support when upscaling. So this might be the only other app that can be used to compare CPU vs. NVGPU vs. AMDGPU.

From ArcSoft's site:
"When upscaling files in ArcSoft TotalMedia? Theatre, SimHD? utilizes NVIDIA® CUDA? and ATI Stream?, the GPU computing technologies, which not only offer large performance benefits but also balance GPU and CPU usage*, enabling running of complicated tasks which requires demanding calculations, without sacrificing output quality."

From your July 8th article link:
NVidia CUDA video application roundup

They tested 7 CUDA enabled apps. Three of which support Stream.
Badaboom
Nero Move It
Super LoiLoScope Mars
Cyberlink MediaShow Espresso
Pegasys TMPGEnc Xpress
Cyberlink PowerDirector 7 Ultra* (Looks like this can be configured for encoding)
ArcSoft TotalMedia Theatre 3 Platinum with SimHD

What about Premiere Pro CS4/4.1 ?

Is that used for encoding video? I really don't know.

I think that's also an 800.00 app. Probably not something you would buy to encode vids for your ipod.

I think Premiere Pro, by itself, is limited to using OpenGL for speeding up graphical stuff that is user interface related. I believe for any accelerated stuff you'd need 3rd party plugins and at this point, nVidia has much better support than ATI.

Adobe is sure to support both - but it will cost you a $299 upgrade fee and 3 long-distance telephone calls to Adobe wondering why all your licensed encoders went bonkers 😀
