ATI needs to put the adaptive algorithm on all their cards 9700/9800

So now that the adaptive algoithm (cheat, optimization) whatever is available on the X800 why doesn't ATI enable it for the 9800 series of cards? It's already in the drvier.... It would be a nice kicker for those of us who bought a 9800xt w/half life 2 only to have it delayed and delayed again...maybe then our 9800 cards would actually play half life 2 with eye candy.....Or was the 9800xt not the preferred graphics for HL2 like they said...? Was it really the X800XT.....

A (Andy/Raja): The image analysis is performed by the driver to chose the appropriate hardware algorithm. This allows us to continually improve the quality and performance with future drivers.


From the ATI interview, I believe it is in use on earlier cards. The R420 just does it better/differently. It is software.

It is not software, read your own quote. The image analysis is done by the driver which chooses the "appropriate hardware algorithm."

Analysis = software
Algorithm (filtering) = hardware

My understanding (and it could be wrong) is that the filtering algorithms may be programmable in the R420, just like the AA sample patterns.

Yeah more than likely it depends on certain hardware otherwise it would automatically be working on all of their boards.

Why would this hardware be in the 9600 and not the 9800 though?

If it is hardware, I can believe its on the 9600 and not on the 9800. 9800 is .15 core based on 9700. 9600 core is .13 technology = newer tech. Maybe the 9600 was used as a gunia pig in the development process for the R420 features.

I hope it isn't so, because I like a free lunch just as much as anyone.
