ATI MOBILITY RADEON 7500 64MB - Any Good? Reviews?

I'm looking at a Dell Dimension Notebook PC with the aforementioned ATI graphics chipset and I want to know how it stacks up. This machine would probably be my primary machine next year in college and I would like it to be able to handle gaming, etc.

According to the latest issue of Maximum PC (Nov., 01):

"The New Mobile 3D Warrior"
"You want portable gaming? The Mobility Radeon 7500 makes Dell's latest notebook the fastest mobile gaming machine ever"

Some comparative test scores:

Set-up 1: 1Ghz PIII/GeForce2 Go - Dell Inspiron 8000
3DMark2001: 1848
Quake III Arena MPC Demo 1280x1024: Would not run
Quake III Demo 1 800x600: 78.9 fps

Set-up 2: 1.2Ghz PIII/Mobility Radeon 7500 - Dell Inspiron 8100
3DMark2001: 3798
Quake III Arena MPC Demo 1280x1024: 38 fps
Quake III Demo 1 800x600: 127 fps

*** Zero-point desktop with GF3 card scores 42 fps in Quake III Arena MPC Demo 1280x1024

"Considering how blazingly fast the original 8000 (Dell Inspiron 8000) was, the scores of the 8100 (Dell Inspiron 8100, with Mobility Radeon 7500) are plumb crazy."

***Full review of the Inspiron 8100 coming up in December issue of Maximum PC***

I'd say it's a safe bet to go with the Mobility Radeon 7500 for all your needs. 🙂

probably nothing better than the Radeon.. they'd need a Geforce 3 type vid card in there ... which isn't the case ... anyway it'll prolly be the same thing. same power... no point in waiting !

Unfortunately nvidia doesn't have the same reputation in the mobile market as the desktop space.
Look through any notebook forum, especially Dell's to see what I mean.

I would (and did) get the Ati version, and not wait around for Nvidia to try and make something better.
Most people on the forums are reporting 50-60% gain over the current GeforceGo chip, no lockups, reboots, or bsod problems.

well here's what I know, the NV17M doesn't offer anything AFAIK feature wise over the 7500. I think they're about even feature wise. performance wise I haven't a clue, though cause I don't even know the complete specs of either I can't even make a guesstimate.

NV17M may be as good (or better) than RM7500, but the most important thing here is that ATi was first to get their product out the door and to market.

the NV17M does offer one more DVD algorithm, offloading a bit more from the cpu. as for performance numbers they're all from nvidia, and who can say how accurate those are out in the real world?
