Mawphoise: you are assuming I havent tried everything. Just so you know I´m a pretty advanced computer user and I spent around 25 hours on this before I decided it´s enough.

Update: Spyre posted this on http://forums.amd.com/game/messageview.cfm?catid=279&threadid=120778&highlight_key=y&keyword1=120 hz : There is a workaroudn for now. You can add higher than 85Hz for CRT users by adding whichever refreshrate you want to the DALNonStandardModesBCD entry(s) of the driver inf before installing the driver or via regedit afterwards and then reboot. So if I wanted 1280 x 960 at 100Hz for arguments sake then I would change 12,80,09,60,00,00,00,00 to 12,80,09,60,00,00,01,00 The last two sets of entries are the refreshrate. If I wanted 95Hz the last two would be 00,95 120 would obviously be 01,20 LCD users wont need to do this as most LCD's dont do over 75Hz anyway. There are people in here who seem to think their LCD can do 75Hz at native rez. NO it can't it can only do that at less than native. The only exception would be the TRUE 120Hz LCD monitors. Works for me, until I connect my 42" tv.

It's still not fixed with 10.2 but as written above, 120hz is available in all resolutions now. I'm still using rivatuner to fix the distortion problem.

a little bit of a noob, but can you go with the 120hz if you configure it with the rivatuner? Cuz i'm getting a computer pretty cheap with the 5850 black edition.

Thanx

I get display corruption (green horizontal bars) when @ 120 hz with the 10.3a previews.

http://web.telia.com/~u27820374/DSC00024.JPG for a pic. Not a very good pic but you can see something what it looks like.

I have had this earlier with all other catalysts, but then I just enable gpu scaling and it dissappeared. Not now however.
Oh and I also tried setting 'reduce dvi freq...' and 'alternate dvi .. '

the 3 options under gpu scaling are greyed out. ie maintain aspect ratio use centered timings and the middle one is chosen 'scale image to full panel size'.

Those bars look vertical. Sorry, just a nitpick. A better pic would be great.

I can only run 120hz at native resolution (1680x1050). As soon as I go to 1400x1050 it switches to 60hz. The new 10.3 drivers did not fix this problem :(

Well my camera doesnt do much better pictures than that and that shows the phenomenon quite clearly. Ie I can see everything thats supposed to be there, except its all covered by a net of vertical green stripes.

Thanks. I got the vx2268wm viewsonic, and yes, when its working its very nice :)

Funny thing it worked for a little bit when I upgraded 10.2 to 10.3. Those where 2 sweet days :)

Then I got the green lines again and tried to reinstall the drivers with no luck. So I had to reinstall win 7. Still got green lines at 120.

GG ati. Guess I know now what brand my next gfx card will be :)

I followed this thread for a while and thought I was going to have to stick with an nVidia graphics card forever. I decided to take the risk on ATI with a POWERCOLOR PCS+ 5850 with my Samsung 2233RZ 120hz monitor.

I just put the card in today and went ahead and installed the 10.4 preview drivers right off the bat. Everything is working perfectly - just like it did with my GTX260. I'm running 1680x1050 at 120hz in Windows 7 64 bit with no text issues or distortion of any kind.

I lowered my screen resolution to 1440x900 and was able to select 120hz, though it centered the image in the middle of the screen with black bars all around it. I doubt I'll ever run at the non-native resolution anyway, so this really isn't a big deal for me.

Just wanted to provide an update in case someone else is on the fence about jumping over to ATI. It looks like they might actually have the drivers working now.

Hello every one
face-icon-small-cool.gif
The 120hz works with the ATI 10.3 driver
face-icon-small-smile.gif
I will explaine how you make 120hz work and how to get full image scaling on non native resolution on 58XX in Windows 7.

But first i have follow this thread for a long time know because i want to buy 2 5850 card for replace my GTX 295. I play games with 120hz and dont want to go back to 60hz that sucks
face-icon-small-happy.gif
I have asked the store to borrow a ATI 5850 card for test the 120hz workes or not. I got the Samsung SyncMaster 2233RZ if some one wounder about that.

After install the ATI 10.3 driver the 120hz works right away. But i find out why the 120hz does not work with everyone. If you push the red and white ATI tray icon at the windows bar, or the Catalyst Control Center as its real name and choose ATI Overdrive.

The Enable ATI Overdrive must not be marked. If you mark it and overclock the gpu then the Curent Values 2D idle mzh will be gpu clock 157mzh and the memory clock 300mzh. If you dont have a mark there then you should have Curent Values 2D idle gpu clock 400mzh and memory clock 1050mzh. Mine Powercolor 5850 PCS+ come with pre overklock so the memory clock value would be 1000mzh normal for 5850.

I know it sucks that you cant overclock and use 120hz
face-icon-small-frown.gif
Hope ATI will fix that but dont hold your breathe. I have not tryed to overclock with msi afterburn or other overclock program. But i will try them soon.

When i tryed playing old games that have not 16:10 widescreen resolution but 4:3 full screen resolution i got black bars on the each side
face-icon-small-mad.gif

To fix that you need to go to Catalyst Control Center again and choose Desktops & Displays. Then right click the small lcd monitor with 1 number on it and choose Configure. Then choose Attributes and mark the Image Scaling Enable GPU scaling and push Apply and you can play in full picture with 4:3 format again

Hi guys,

Very new here but I've been dealing with this issue for sometime.

Bottom line: ATI and 120HZ monitors have really bad support.

However, we do have a bit of light ahead of us.

I'm running an ATI 5770 (single) on a Samsung 2233 120HZ monitor.

Like many of you said, it causes flickers on your desktop (you can make this happen by dragging say a text file to the right of your screen in windows 7 and it'll resize and flicker the desktop.

In game, it can cause grey/green vertical lines (up and down) to show up on your screen.

What's happening?

Nvidia has been ahead of the game with it's 3D gaming, and with the 3D they've always had the need to run the 3D at 120HZ in order for the 3D to work.

Nvidia = Fully Supports 120hz monitors.

ATI = Not big into the 3D Gaming market at this time.

Your ATI Card has 2 main parts, 2D and 3D (not the Avatar type of 3D!).

ATI's 2D clocks are to low to support the 120hz.

That's it. Wake up ATI, adjusts your clocks!

The FIX?

Well, good news. I just installed the 10.4b drivers, and sadly they DO NOT WORK.

However, a couple weeks ago I found a nice leaked 10.5 Driver release

You can download them here: http://www.ngohq.com/home.php?page=Files&go=cat&dwn_cat_id=18&go=giveme&dwn_id=1049

Then hit "I Agree" mid page and it'll start the download

These are the only drivers I've noticed to remove about 95% of all 120hz issues.

Keep in mind these are beta drivers etc etc may end the world LHC style etc etc.

But for those that are at the end of your rope, I hope it helps. Works for me!

G'Luck!

After many hours of google searching. This appears to be the best and most detailed thread re Ati cards and the Samsung 2233rz..

Can anyone confirm if this is now fixed?

The guy above said most problems are fixed with the 10.5 drivers..?!

I can confirm that with a samsung 2233rz monitor, any resolution at 120HZ and Scaling works perfect w/ a 4890 and catalyst 10.2. I play counter strike 1.6 @ 800x600 @ 120hz. The OSD on the monitor will still say 1680x1050 @ 120hz, but the game will be 800x600 maxed to top and bottom of monitor w/ black bars on left and right to maintain aspect ratio.

NOTE: I did not install the samsung monitor drivers.

I want to step up to CF 5770s or a 5850, but im worried ill lose 120hz on my monitor...

Anyone else have any news ?

I've been using the samsung 22" 120hz monitor for a couple weeks now without problems. I'm using 10.3 drivers and all I did was set it to 120hz in CCC. I did not install the monitor drivers either so maybe that makes a difference. I haven't really screwed around with it a ton, but I'll try different resolutions tonight to see if 120hz works there as well.
