I just finished installing them, I'll do some testing, seems that it has only solved some issues and some performance improvements for the Radeon HD owners, grab them up!!

This release of Catalyst? introduces an enhanced version of ATI Overdrive for the ATI Radeon? HD 2600 Series and ATI Radeon? HD 2400 Series. Users can now Over-clock both GPU engine and graphics memory clock speeds in Crossfire? mode (and over-clock single ATI Radeon? graphics accelerators as well). This version of ATI Overdrive also includes a new stress test application to verify any over-clocking speeds users may have configured (either manually or through the auto-tuning tool) on their ATI Radeon? graphics accelerators.
Note: In CrossFire? configuration, the OverDrive 5.0 test application will run only on first GPU and any unlinked GPUs. As a consequence auto-tuning of linked adapters will not be available in the Radeon? 8.40 software driver release. Also, the Manual Test button will be grayed out if the selected GPU is Slave. Missing support is due to a limitation in current driver implementation and will be resolved in upcoming driver release.
Performance Improvements

The following performance improvements are noticed with Catalyst? 7.8:

* Lost Planet DX10 with anti-aliasing improves 11% or greater on Radeon? HD2900XT products
* Radeon? HD2600 and Radeon? HD2400 (single and CrossFire?) show improvements of as much as 6% in 3DMark 2006 and 3DMark 2005
* Serious Sam 2 with HDR enabled improves as much as 14.5% on Radeon? HD2900, Radeon? HD2600 and Radeon? HD2400 products

There's something wrong with the new drivers. When I install them, after the reboot the desktop have no icons but only the letters, the CCC Skin setting won't work properly, only the System Skin would work, the other ones just looked very abnormal and the SmartGart only has Fast Writes On, everything else is Off, I even forced them on and after a reboot, they would remain off.

I uninstalled the old ones like I usually do, normal uninstall, reboot in safe mode, driver cleaner, reboot, installed the new drivers and reboot. I tried them twice and the issue won't dissappear, I even reinstalled the Chipset drivers manually just to make sure everything was set, even I checked the registry for errors and no good. I also reinstalled the .Net Framework and no go. Something is fishy with those drivers, I just installed back the 7.7 version and now the issues are gone. Weird.

Fixing games that aren't even out yet?... Some games that may need 'fixes' are often like that because it is on the developer to fix the abnormalities rather than ATI, for instance stalker had quite a few issues at release and after a few patches I haven't encountered any problems with it.

On another note I will be sure to test these out when my 2900xt 1gb arrives later this week.

Good driver support entails backwards compatibility as well as supporting new titles.

I'm sure that ATI was not zeroing in on SS2 performance improvements. I think it was just a side benefit of refined driver. A bonus. Which is never a bad thing. ;)

I updated these drivers (Vista) from Cats 7.4 and I am welcomed by a black screen (with sound and stuff). ok then.. I go to safe mode and try to uninstall it but nooooooo..I can't uninstall the drivers in Vista's safemode for some stupid reason. I then use driver cleaner and take everything out. So now there are no drivers installed at all...so I install the Cats 7.8 in safe mode and get a nice "cannot load device detection" error..something like that. I get that error whether I'm installing the driver, updating it..etc. Of course I still cannot uninstall it in safemode so its time to use driver cleaner once again!!! Not lets try to reinstall my old Cats 7.4 that is still around. Nice..i get the same cannot load device detection error!!!

So I go back to good ol' regular Vista without any drivers installed. Nice and clean..so lets try to install Cats 7.8 now. ok..its installing.. then.. WTF... cannot find the damn driver's .INF file?! CCC installs so I then go to device manager and manually install the display driver. ok..no error and Vista says its done. reboot.. BLACK SCREEN AGAIN!

I just shut off my damn pc (I'm using my macbook at the moment) and will try again another day. <sigh> Amazing the trouble I get just to install a damn display driver and yes..I've updated radeon drivers plenty of times in Vista with no problems. I'll go see if I can find one of those modified ones like Omega's but his is only up to 7.4. Anyone know of a more recent modified non-ccc driver like Omega's but uses ATI Tray Tools instead?

i'll try them on one XP and one Vista Partition each

i hope to update my 2900xt benches this weekend if anyone is interested ... i skipped 7.7 as they really sucked for a driver release

Glad to see they are getting those 3DMarkXX way scores up there for the 2600 and 2400 series

Well, I tried once more and they still giving me issues, seems that something is wrong with the SmartGart driver or with the Catalyst, I'll try to install the driver later but with the old CCC to see if it works, otherwise I'll just skip this driver release, after all, there's not any fixes relevant for my card.

Haven't had any issues with this driver yet, but haven't fully tested it in many games yet.

Same issue here, I changed the desktop resolution, rebooted, then changed the resolution back, fixed it.

lol ur doing something wrong here. the drivers should install fine. you're not supposed to uninstall in safe mode. you're not supposed to install in safe mode. they dont support graphics drivers.

try a uninstall in windows mode, boot into safe mode, driver cleaner, boot into windows mode then install the 7.8's they should work. all else fail try a reformat of windows Xp and it'll work

Like I said.. I had no choice but to go to safe mode because after the installation of the drivers I get a black screen (with sound so something is going on) when Vista is at the desktop. What could I even do there?? Since in safe mode there are no graphic drivers used I couldn't do a damn thing except use driver cleaner to wipe it all out and go back into vista with the default drivers the OS uses and try to install again with a clean slate. Tried it again and again... a black screen.

In any case after some more headaches I went back to the 7.4's and its working again. Very annoying.

I've got the exact same problem, I wonder if its only limited to AGP based systems.

Didn't nVidia say that their DX10 drivers had to be written from scratch alongside the DX9 drivers? Perhaps this is why AMD's code is twice as large under Vista 32-bit.

BTW, congratulations on the wireless broadband!

ATI Catalyst 7.8 Performance Analysis

"Final Thoughts

Talk about one extreme to the other - the 7.7driver set did very little for us in just about every way but the 7.8 drivers have knocked the ball out of the court. These are an absolutely fantastic driver for anyone who has or is thinking about adopting a new HD 2600 card from AMD.

This could be the driver we need to get the performance up and above the Nvidia competition. We will be looking at this shortly in separate articles as the HD 2600 review samples are piling up and it?s time to see what they can really do.

Something else that is worth noting that wasn?t mentioned was the fact that this driver includes full support for the HD 2400 XT, we would have tested the card but with the 7.7 drivers not supporting it, we didn?t really have the opportunity, we will look at it though next month.

A great driver from AMD and the chances are you will find yourself upgrading straight away, at least you should!"

God they should stop fixing serious sam 2.

ATI should worry about :

HL 2 , episode 1 and 2
BF2142
Quake War ET
Stalker
Oblivion
World in conflict
UT2007
Crysis
Bioshock

Fixing games that aren't even out yet?... Some games that may need 'fixes' are often like that because it is on the developer to fix the abnormalities rather than ATI, for instance stalker had quite a few issues at release and after a few patches I haven't encountered any problems with it.

On another note I will be sure to test these out when my 2900xt 1gb arrives later this week.

Okay they have World in conflict , Bioshock , Quake War ET game avaliable for tweaking. World in conflict dev released a beta and it was a total joke as the dev didn't even test the game on any ATI gpu. World in conflict has major bug/glichtes if you run the game on every ATI product form R420 to R520 to R600. Dev thoughts if it works on Nvidia card it would work on ATI card. also they were spoon fed for GPU tweak by Nvidia as they flew alot of engineers to tweak the engine to make the game run good on Nvidia card. Also the game went gold with all thoes bugs which was stupid since they are screwing over 30% of their customers. But dev team working for games like Bioshock , Crysis actually are making sure the game runs on ATI and Nvidia gpu. Like bioshock hold back the pc demo so they can give ATI and Nvidia enough time to tweak driver for their game.
