Not good news for ATI. The money they've put into the X700XT is lost, and the failure to bring the card to market damages their credibility.
I imagine this was a "cut your losses" type move.

Yeah, the next thing you know they will be releasing cards with faulty non functioning hardware and cancelling the next 2 generations of cards. 😉

Hmmm. I could swear this thread was about the X700XT? Why are you trying to turn it into a ATI vs nVidia flamefest?

I'll PM you my thoughts on your comments, out of respect to the OP.
Oh come on Rollo, you know I enjoy your flamewars. 😀

I say bring it on. Thanks for the consideration tho. 😉

Well, it's you're thread, so here's what I PMd ZimZum:

"Yeah, the next thing you know they will be releasing cards with faulty non functioning hardware and cancelling the next 2 generations of cards. "

That's all well and good, but:

1. You don't know the hardware is faulty, or to what extent.
2. What it's faulty at is video encode at a little used format, for that matter a little used feature on a gaming card?
3. ATI still has nothing at all to compete with the 6600GT and 6800NU? If that's not a big deal to you, I can guarantee you that it is to them.
4. One of the cards they "cancelled" was a refresh part that wouldn't have differentiated itself from the current 6800U. The other, if it's truly cancelled, is likely due to the recent announcement of nVidia's affiliation with Sony, which will sell more GPUs for them, by far, than ATIs XBox and Gamecube contracts combined.
5. You don't really need to offer refresh part when your current situation is: $200 market- nVidia owns $300 market- nVidia owns $400 market-nVidia owns $500 market - flip a coin Big Bucks cost no object market- nVidia has no competition at all.
6. Did I mention nForce4 motherboards are being built as I type this, it's rumoured SoundStorm is returning, nVidia stock just went up 50%, and they inked a deal with Intel to build motherboards for Intel CPUs as well?

Talk smack all you like about nVidia ZimZum, but they owned ATI this year. No lack of PVP for the relatively few people who want to watch movies on little monitors instead of big tvs is going to change that.

<winces and prepares for wrath of video encode/decode community>

Nonetheless, what I said is true, the video features community is a small minority of the people who bought these cards. (not to mention fixes and second gen parts are in the works as we speak)

The only other statement I'd qualify is the the GT "owns" the $400MSRP, might be a little exaggeration? 😉

Anyway, like I said, none of the above is keeping me from being psyched my XT PE should be here Monday or Tuesday. ( not to mention I've almost pulled the trigger on a X800 Pro many times lately as well just to check them out)

Nice post.

I don't understand how potential buyers can complain about the "broken" video encode features of the NV40. It's a feature that ATi doesn't even offer. You're also correct in stating that ATi was completely PWNED by nVidia this year (aside from the mobile market). I'm pretty sure next year the tables will turn though. It seems to be a repeating trend, and from what I've read nVidia will not have an answer to the R520 (R300 anyone?). 2006 will be another nVidia year though (again just a prediction 😉).

Muchos Gracias. nVidia had a good year, I think the strength of their line caught ATI offguard, and that ATI is devoting much time to R520/Xbox.

I honestly hope next year brings more manufacturers of mid-high gaming card to the table. (although I imagine ATI and nVidia don't 😉 )

How would you know?

1. I was talking about encoding. Did you not see the word "encode" in the text you quoted?

2. I know because I read up on these things. You should read some videocard reviews and benchmarks from time to time.

What I don't like is when people say " ATi has lost this generation, Nvidia is soo much better... blah blah blah...". If one looks at the benchmarks, in gaming anyway, the only game that Nvidia leads in is Doom3. The only real areas where ATi has not been up to snuff is with only PS2.0 support, the X800 Pro only having 12 pipes, and no Sli. I dont think that Sli is that big of a feature anyway... if they had it last generation, would you rather have 2x5900Ultra's/2x9800XT's or 1x6800Ultra/1xX800XT? Seeing as all said cards cost 400+ dollars, it is quite easy to make that decision. ATi and Nvidia are both guilty of paper launches and cancelled cards. Both companies are producing great cards, this round, with Ati leading in HL2 and Nvidia in Doom3.
