heh.. with all the talk about ati and the quality of their drivers, I took my radeon back out of the box and installed it in a machine I'm building for the kids. heard alot about how good the latest driver was, so I decided to have another go. celeron, with abit zm6 mainboard.. pretty std setup, 3com nic, sb, and of course the radeon. nothing else.

formatted the ibm h/d, installed win98se, installed the nic drivers, then downloaded the latest drivers from ati. lo and behold, they will not install; hangs everytime.

you gotta love ati :Q

lmao that's always good.. sounds like a non-ATi problem to me.. hanging? I can't remember but AFAIK it took a really long time to do something when first installing drivers for my Radeon, but it finished eventually. perhaps you're mistaking a hang for the computer doing it's job in the background not visible to u. I know I was tempted to reboot my computer but held on just to be sure.

did you download from ATi's website? I recommend the 7184 drivers from Rage 3D for pre-7000 and 8000 series Radeons, but u can't get them there anymore AFAIK..

hmm I never tried those.. perhaps those are the last ones before they started fooling with Truform in Half Life (now with the latest ones you have to disable it when you're in half life).

Why not try installing from the control panel instead of using the .exe? Not sure but installing the ATI drivers is a mixed bag. Some have great success, some people cna't get it workig at all. I dont think you should blame ATi for that though, since i've heard just as many of those problems as with nVidia. Stuff like drivers wont install, etc etc. Often it's got to do w/ the rest of the system, and no the video card.

Just use the 7075 drivers--they work for everything and are the most stable.

By the way, make sure agp fast writes are disabled in the bios. It'll cause the card to hang.

lol.. how much more basic can you get?

intel cpu
intel chipset
1cdrom
1 floppy
1 nic
1 sb sound card
1 hard disk
fresh install win98

on the other hand, here's another system:

amd cpu
amd 761/via686b chipset
gf3 vivo
1 nic
1 modem (lol.. only for faxing)
ati tvwonder
sb audigy
1 floppy
4 hard disk (raid)
1 zip drive
1 cdrw
1 dvd drive
1 scanner
1 logitech force joystick
1 ms force wheel
1 ms gamevoice
1 gravis gamepad
1 ms gamevoice
windows xp professional (upgraded from win2k)

umm.. no problem installing nv drivers using nvidia's exe/install feature. if you can't be compatible with intel cpu/bx chipset with literally no peripherals, that's not saying alot....

anyways, back to the original problems.. let the install run and checked back 15 min later, still in the same spot. installed manually and got it to work. not that big a deal for a tech or enthusiast, but how about all the users who don't have a clue? this could be quite a frustration, just as having to "tweak" it to make a game run properly. I don't know if that's the case with "these" drivers yet, but in the past it's been this way, and there are alot of posts over at rage on workarounds for particular games....

anyways, I'll play with the card to see if it fixes some past glitches, but in the meantime using a "workaround" I was able to get the drivers to install. weird tho, when I bump the res up, there is a strange low-pitched buzz comping from the case..

thanks taylor..

yea, the "fast write" issue is well known to most of us.. but again, what about the clueless pc users? anyways, I will run these drivers a bit, and if I run across problems I may give the 7075's a shot.

thanks again!

install drivers with an .exe?? who does that? I always just install new drivers by going to the device manager, display adaptor, driver tab, update driver.. simple, and easy!
