well i got my channelmaster antenna today
and im giving windows MCE a try and let me tell you its 10000000x better then crappy ATI player in windows xp. playback is flawless in MCE where as in XP it was super choppy and buggy.

Can you get MCE with a remote without having to buy a whole system? Is there anything special about and MCE remote that something like the Snapstream Firefly won't do?

I guess you're missing anandtechs "Once you know, you newegg" advertising campaign, or you can do what I always do and get it cheaper and faster from zipzoomfly.

Here's the links for all the anandtech potatoes who think it's quicker and easier to ask a simple question and wait for an answer than it is to type a couple of words into a goggle search box.

So I could do that at Goggle.com?

If you can't figure out google try your hand at froogle and if that doesn't work don't even leave anandtech, just go here.

I "Reserved" one at my local CompUSSR, which showed in-stock. After I went over there, they told me they didn't actually have any, oh well.

However, I then took my order print out over to WorstBuy to see if they had any to PM.

The CS lady called up CompUSSR to verify the price (I told her I came to WorstBuy before CompUSSR to see if I could PM), and was on hold for about 5 minutes before she gave up.

She decided to give me the PM, but rung up the item at 149.99$. I asked her about the extra 10% off they are suppose to give me for not being the lowest price and she said she didn't know what I was talking about. I pointed to the big terms and conditions wallpaper behind her and read the part about the pricematch + 10%. She thought about it for a few minutes, then decided to give me the 10% off.

I guess if you don't say anything, WorstBuy will try to stiff you.

Anyway, I'm going to try this sucker out and see if I can get all the stations that are near me.

I've found that the included antenna works for me. If it doesn't, I wonder if you need an outdoor antenna?

Bought one tonight. Got it home and discovered someone stole the antenna out of it. Any suggestions? If I go back to CrapUSA will they exchange it?

oh man how crappy. even tho the antenna is worth about 5 dollars your paying for it so you better get it with the package.

the included antenna is actually $40 retail and is the BEST indoor antenna bar none.

the included antenna is the best indoor antenna around.

Anyone know if an "outdoor" HDTV antenna can be mounted in the attic instead of atop the roof? My wife doesn't want an antenna showing, and I've got plenty of room in my attic. Based on research of my area, I don't think the indoor antenna is going to cut it. Also, how much does mounting hardware typically cost ... if I get a $50 antenna and install it myself, what's my total cost going to run?

You can basically just bolt it to a joist or a rafter. How much that will cost probably depends on what type of antenna you get, I guess, and how much coax you need to run.

Mounting the exact same antenna inside the attic as opposed to on the roof, can result in anywhere between 20% to 50% signal degradation. However, attic mount is still a LOT better than just a plain indoor antenna; so you can give it a shot and see how it works. Depending on how far you are from the nearest HD transmission towers, this might just be fine for you. If the antenna alone doesn't work, try a pre-amp also.

[EDIT]
Here is a very good antenna (for attic or outdoor) and a preamp.

Channel Master CM 4228 8-bay bow tie UHF antenna @ SolidSignal.com
Channel Master CM 7777 UHF+VHF+FM pre-amp @ SolidSignal.com

.

Attic should work OK. I live in an area where the HD signal is blocked by a mountain and had no reception with the included antenna. (antennaweb said I should only get 2/25 channels available) I put a Samsung amplified indoor antenna on top of a bookshelf on the second floor of my condo and I pick up almost all of them now.

By the way, I got the HDTV wonder to work with MCE 2005 by itself no problem with hacked drivers and some instructions I found on avsforums.

WOW!! It's AMAZING!! I'm getting all the regular channels in HD form and MUCH more. Reception is 80% or higher. This is with the included HD antenna. I'm really impressed! When I change channels, it might have some audio static for a few seconds but the video feed is good and eventually the audio will sync and the static goes away.

My system:
1.6GHZ overclocked to 2.4GHZ
512MB RAM
ATI AIW Radeon 32MB DDR
DELL 2001FP @ 1280x960

hmm.. The sale is still on. Maybe that's their new price. The online prices haven't really dropped that low yet though.

I'm using this antenna http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&product%5Fid=15-2160
in my attic and it works much better for me than the included antenna (all the digital stations in my area are about 20 miles away). The RS antenna is only $25 and I mounted it (w/included hardware) on an old photo tripod for ease in fine-tuning the aiming. I planned to mount it permanently as described by huesman above, but haven't bothered yet

As for dhoytw's "not too hot" comment, except for BF at Microcenter I haven't seen this product cheaper, and that deal required a rebate. It would be interesting to know about those "quite a few places" that have it for $145.

even newegg and the likes dont have it close to 145.

also i meant to say i got the channel master 4228 .. just the antenna with no pream mounted on my roof pointed to san francisco runing 50 ft of coax that goes to a splitter then 1 to my pc and 1 to my dlp directv tv setup and its awesome.
