ATi HD6570 vs nVIDIA GT550 (GDDR5 vs GDDR3)

Hey there,

First time poster, long time lurker here. So, basically I've decided between two laptops finally and to me it comes down to the video card, the rest of the specs are the same: ATi HD6570(GDDR5) vs nVIDIA GT550(GDDR3).

The clock speeds are similar, and their bench marks are close with the higher clocked GT550 pulling out ahead (www.notebookcheck.com), but both cards come in GDDR5 and GDDR3 flavors and the benchmark on the site doesn't specify which versions were benchmarked. So my question is, which video card would be better gaming. I'm a university student so I'd like to get as much bang as I can for what few bucks I have 🙂

Are you sure the GT550 is the GDDR3 version? Notebookcheck would have tested the GDDR5 version which WOULD affect performance. If the GDDR5 version of both were about the same in benchmarks and you can get the ATi HD 6570 WITH GDDR5 then i would get that.

Yea from the specs the GT550m is GDDR3 and the ATi is GDDR5. On notebookcheck the 550m, is spec'd higher. So basically the ATi would be faster since it has GDDR5?

Is it another one of those nVidia technology vs ATi things or is GDDR5 actually faster? It's not like VRAM is it?
 
It heavily depends on the used memory, as DDR3 should be a bottleneck for the performance.

DDR3 is going to hinder you....

Here is another comparison (this time with the HD 5850m)
In the 3DMark Vantage tests, the impact of DDR3 versus GDDR5 can be seen. The GDDR5 version (on par with a GTX 285M) is about 40% faster in this benchmark than the DDR3 equipped version (on par with a GTX 260M)

Oh wow, compared to the 5850 the card I'm looking is mid-ranged. Didn't realize GDDR5 was such a bottleneck. Considering both the laptops come w/ a Sandy Bridge Processor I guess it would make sense to go for the DDR5 ATi, even though it has a lower clock speed.

Yea but I'm sort of hindered by what's available in Malaysia within my price range. I'd love to order from the US, but shipping would be a pretty hefty price. My absolute limit for a laptop would be $1050 US which would include shipping. Ideally, $950 US which would leave me enough money to bump my ram to 8 GB (for fun!) and buy a decent cooling pad.

They don't really do refurbished here, and that laptop would be probably around 2K US here... which is waaay past my budget. I'm open to suggestions if you know of any laptops that have good video cards in my price range. I'd try and see how much shipping would cost me. But at the moment these two laptops are my best options.
