ATI Driver Increases on Older Hardware

I recently decided to update my drivers for my rig - (P4 3.2E (Presshot at stock), Asus P4P800 E Mobo 1GB Corsair 2-2-2-5 Mem, Asus 9600XT Stock (500/600)) after reading about some of the new performance increases from later drivers. As it turned out I hadn't updated them since Cats 4.11. (Guess I was lazy)

So without further ado here's what I found

3DM05
..............................Cat 4.11..........Cat5.11..........Cat5.13
9600XT (500/600)....1545...............2086...............2122
9600XT (500/600)....%100..............%135..............%137

9600XT(526/648).....1619...............2184...............2240
9600XT(526/648).....%100..............%135..............%138

*UPDATE*
3DM03
9600XT(526/648).....4230...............4557...............4578
9600XT(526/648).....%100..............%107..............%108

Not a bad increase from 1 year to the next ~35% and then another ~2-3% between monthly updates. It at least gives my 9600XT a little more life.

Now I need to see how that translates into game play!:D

*UPDATE*
Not as much on 3DM03 but I wasn't really expecting much

Ooops! I am still running a 9700Pro with old drivers and DirectX 9.0b --- yeah you guessed it, no gaming done in quite a while.

yeah... I'm not much of a gamer either, but for some reason it's really important to me to have the best performance I can get -_-:D. I got an AIW x800xt, stuck with stock drivers as it came out really late in the x800's life and new drivers always focused on the new h/w.... or so I thought. So now I'm very excited to d/l the new drivers when I get home! Great thread!

Thanks Paratus.

I don't recall gfx driver improvements like that since quite a while. Anyway, seems a few years back in the "Ti" days.

I'll take my dad (using a 9600p) the new cat 5.13 and install for him on Christmas (another little Christmas present ;) )

No problem - I'm running 3DM03 to see what I get there but I'm not expecting as much.

I know!

While most ATs' reveiws are good. The GPU reviews, recently, seem like they are just going through the motions. Maybe we should PM a couple of the reviewers with improvments we'd like to see.

Anyhow I'm off to work in 20 minutes. Later

I've been postiing my results in almost every ATi driver release for my r9700pro.

Your results are not any different than what I posted.
I guess no one reads anymore.

Now I have a x850xt.
So, no longer 'old' hardware... well not real old anyway.

Pretty funny that your 9600XT scores almost as high as my 9800P in both 3DM03 and 3DM05. My CPU and RAM (XP 2400+ Tbred, 1GB PC2100) are holding me back immensely. I get 2500 in 3DM05, 5400 in 3DM03, and just 11300 in 3DM01SE. My CSS Stress Test scores are pretty pathetic, too.

Just goes to show you that a decent CPU and memory bandwidth are important, too, which makes the new console CPUs so interesting.

I have yet to complete my tests of the 5.13 drivers but so far it appears that single core systems get no performance gain from them in games.

I havent tested any games, but I did get a 200 point increase in 3dmark05, and that's on a single core cpu.

cat 5.12: 7002 (or might have been the 5.11's, I dont remember...)
cat 5.13: 7216
