ATI Control Center or Control Panel - which one to use?

I just got the ATI AIW X800 XT and was wondering which one was better to use.

I've never used the CCC, but I have heard its just bloat from alot of people. I've stuck with the plan Control panel, but I just got my XT so I hanv't had much time to try other drivers out yet.

You're right. You also need Microshaft's .net v1.1 for the CCC. Screw that! The CP works just fine and isn't bloatware.

You need the CCC to enable hardware softshadows in Splinter Cell Chaos Theory with an ATI card. It doesnt really take up much ram, and it let s you see the results of your 3d settings being tweaked with a real time 3d rendering. It is pretty useful.

How do you do that? I use the CCC and didn't have the option to enable them.

The last time I installed the CCC it wouldn't boot up and it wiped out nearly all my OS display options (all I had left was resolution and color depth). ATI won't help either....they just give you a form response that's next to useless. I ended up uninstalling the thing and going back to the basic ATI control panel.

IMO the best way is to only install the driver, no control panel. and then get ATI Tray Tools. Tray tools is definately my favorite for OC'ing and switching between display setting. Also doesn't kill your system resources.

After trying all the various control panels and tweaks for ATI video cards, I've found "ATI Tool 0.0.23" the most useful and enjoyable so far... ATI Tray tools will also get the job done as grimlykindo has pointed out...

According to Ubisoft, the Cat 5.4s of the CCC allows R300 and up cards to use the hardware softshadows. I used Omega 5.4s, then when I went to CCC 5.4s, the box became checkable.

I have a Radeon 9800 Pro. It should work with your X800. Make sure you have the latest drivers.

That's a bright (<-- sarcasm) move by ati - require me to install some bloatware to use the functionality that should be enabled by the driver. I'd certainly like HW soft shadows, but no way am I installing CCC to enable it. I hope thare'a another way around it.
