w00t! Even with an older game like Counter-Strike I had drops in performance with no AA/AF on my 9800XT. It was unbearable. It would go from 99.9 FPS to somewhere in the 60's FPS then back up to 99.9 FPS. This would cause some small glitches. I had vertical sync on too. Then I installed these cats and now no more glitching!

Ugh, this driver release is what is keeping me from choosing between a x1800 XL and 7800gt. I can get either for $320 but tomorrow (when I would expect to hear more details about ati's new performance benchmarks) the 7800gt goes up in price $20. Oh what to do....

I gained 9fps in 1280x1024 and 11fps in 1600x1200 with Doom3. It seems the biggest gain for X800 series are at higher res with no AA.

X800 Pro Cat 5.11

1280x1024 HQ 0AA, 8xAF = 58.9 fps
1600x1200 HQ 0AA, 8xAF = 43.4 fps

Actually I think they did stuff across the board. They say "OpenGL games" 'such as' Quake 3, Wolfenstein (I know they'd never bother to increase the speed of those old things specifically
On the R520 cards the gain is across the board because the new memory controller has been tweaked for OpenGL.

On the older cards the gain tends to only be for Quake 4 because I suspect they implemented application specific optimizations.

Where's Rollo with a response to these across the board "optimizations". I think I read that an engineer discovered a driver path or something that wasn't right or something that allowed for the great increase on Opengl performance. I am sure Nvidia is scratching their heads over this one. (I own a 7800GTX for anyone who would accuse me of fanboyism, LOL)

Yeah, yeah, I know it's about the 6800gs, but it includes other cards with the latest games and drivers, and I can draw 2 conclusions so far:
1) With the new drivers the x1800xt pretty much owns the single high end card category.

Yeah but the question is, why would anyone buy any high end card today when you can get 2 6800GSs for $200 each put them in SLI for $400 and overclock them to 500/1100? Hmm......I used to give thumbs down to SLI for performance for the money....should I start changing this recommendation?

wow! My 3Dmark05 score actually went down 300 points. I used to get 5331, now I get 5034. I'm interested to know if the increase in performance is only on the newer X1000 series cards, because these new cats do nothing more than kick my rig in the nuts.

Well my 3dmark05 scores went up - I actually broke 7000 on my gto.

OK, anyone with an x800xl that can test this?

I assume you have an AGP XL, I'll test it out on mine tonight, as well as on my PCIe GTO2.

yes, it's AGP. You'll find most people at this point running an Asrock board running AGP. This is because the Asrock allows both AGP and PCI-E on the same board. Greatly appreciated, many thanks.

Alright, it was a pain to install the Cat 5.11 because I forgot I had an ATI Tv card in that box, needless to say, driver cleaner really works...

My AGP X800XL had scored a 4841 with the old cats, it scored a 4934 with 5.11. So mine did go up. Everything stock, no ocing the processor or the video card.

Sad, I guess this is where I say "it's not you, it's me". :(
I was thinking a format might be fun this time of year anyway.

Mine (x800xl) has gone up from 5000 to 5130 (3dmark05). Most if not all of my games have improved frame rate too.:D
