ATi Catalyst 3.9 Available

funny how they kept claiming that the 3.8's were fine (even with all the evidence of damaged hardware) yet they release the new version 3.9 in record time 😀

This may have more to do with the 9600XT release (which the 3.8 Cats didn't fully support) than the mysterious hardware damage issue (which seems to have completely vanished).

What boggles my mind are that these are apparently dated 9/30, that's a week BEFORE the 3.8's were released.

I`ve installed the 3.9s,I also used the ATI uninstall utility in "add/remove programs" icon ,I went into safe mode and used Driver Cleaner which found & cleaned the remaining ATI files so the ATI uninstall utility is not perfect.

So far no problems and IQ quality is nice at desktop,I did notice with the 3.8s, they were not up to the usual ATi/DVI IQ standard that I`m use too🙂.

I was thinking the same thing. 🙂

ATTENTION: The monitor refresh rate problem has not been fixed with this driver release. After I installed them my monitor started smelling like burning rubber and kept blacking out. I just realized this after uninstalling the drivers and my expensive LCD has been spared an untimely death because of incompetent programmers.

I installed the Omega 3.7s and everything is working fine and no rubber smell. 🙂

Just because you had a problem does not mean everyone will. I could just as easily blame user error on your part.

I installed them correctly, I have done this many times.

I have read that thread at rage3d (there are 33 pages, btw, not 50+). Back when the 3.8s came out, there was a huge furor and supposedly "150" monitors damaged by the new drivers in the first two days of release.

It took a few days before everyone calmed down a little and realized that there were *maybe* 10 people who actually reported damage to their cards or monitors (and only about half of them reported monitor deaths), and a few of them had just been crossposting or reposting in different forums and making the whole thing seem bigger than it was.

The most telling point is that the entire issue seemed to die out about 3 days after it started. If there was really a serious, widespread problem, it would be ongoing -- and there would be a steady stream of people showing up with posts like "Why is my monitor/video card dead?" The fact is that nearly half a million people have downloaded (and presumably installed) these drivers, and nobody seems to be reporting new instances of this problem.

I'm 99% sure they released the 3.9 drivers to enable Overdrive for the 9600XT (which was not turned on in the 3.8s), and they fixed some game issues while they were at it.

I've read several posts from people that keep up-to-date with the Rage3D forum, and there seems to be a general agreement that the "several hundred" reports of dead monitors/cards came from only a couple people. And like other people have said, why did the issue all of a sudden die off if it is a real problem? I would think there would be more and more reports of dead monitors/cards being made the more people download/install the drivers.

And I'm going to have to pull up the BS flag on this statement. If your monitor was at the point that you could smell something burning, it wouldn't just magically work perfectly fine afterwords. Every time I have smelled that dreaded "burnt electronics" smell (whether it was on a computer, radio, tv, whatever) that product no longer functioned properly afterwords, it wasn't always dead but SOMETHING on it didn't work right afterwords. Maybe you just have some space-aged self-repairing electronic parts or something.

its 50 pages for me 🙂 mine is set to show 20 posts per page, im gessing yours is set for 30 per page

anyway i dont think its a common problem, but from all ive read i do think that with some monitors in some cases the rapid refresh rate changes can kill the monitor... which is why i think the 3.9's were released so quickly.. also if you read the release notes for the 3.9's they sure list a whole bunch of fixes that are releated to monitors. i dont think its a coincidence
