So ok the 6800 ultra gets beat by up to 22% by the x800 XT (no PE ) from what i have read on some internet sites. bear in mind that this is with 8x AF and 4x FSAA @ 1600x1200, and without the FSAA things ar a lot more in line. Things look even worse for nvidia by the fact that the 6800GT, a fully fledged, all the pipe-lines-a-go-go part equals the performance from the x800 - pro, a card that retails at the price of the 6800GT but with its 12 pipelines should really be in the 6800NU sector ( really badly placed price wise by ATI IMHO ). but then lets look at things here i a bit more depth. U can have a 6800Gt and run hl2 at 1600x1200 and still get 77fps with a 4000+ behind it.
hardly a crushing defeat for the 6800Gt, let alone the ULTRA (80fps).
slap on FSAA @ 4x and the ULTRA still whacks home a tasty 65.6 FPS.
So, to recap the ATI killer app yes the ATI is 20% faster but the ULTRA still holds down a nice 65 FPS in the most demanding of settings on this games. Lets take Nvidias Killer APP, doom 3:
well at 1600x1200 4x FSAA ULTRA settings the 6800GT, a card in a class below the highest end radeon, scores 5.1 FPS faster than the x800 xt-PE. this is about 20% faster.
at 1600x1200 /ULTRA witout the FSAA a 6800 ULTRA scores 66.6 FPS the x800 XT-PE scores 51.5 FPS
so again, around About 20% faster. yet in both cases ( especially the hl2 / nvida
side of things ) either card still poffers performance which is very good.
yes half life 2 does run a tad nicer on ATI hardware, and yes, DOOM 3 the same on Nvidia, but either archetecture will play either game at very acceptable levels, and i dont think any owner of either card / game will be really dissapointed with given combinations.
There is one thing i have to say though, its intresting to note that in nvidias defence, there low-high end part, the 6800GT is much better rounded for the money. It plays doom 3 amazingly, and still delivers 65 FPS in hl2 at 16x12.
the same cannot be said of the x800-
PRO. this card is good in hl2, but suffers very badly in doom 3 compared to its nvidia counterpart. whilst the proice range is the same, it is safe to say that a 400$ NV part will play both doom 3 and hl2 pretty much fllawless ly yet x800-pro will get skitty at 16x12 in doom 3 whilst a GT will not.
I dont have much to base this on othe rthan personal feelings, but i wonder if there are others, who, like me, feel x800 pro is sat in a bad market position, priced to high for the perfoirmance it delivers compared to its bigger brother, and its nvidia stablemate.
