The upsetting fact is that other sites will probably not use the 4.12 betas because they are beta drivers and yet they offered several bug fixes and 10-15% increases on the timedemo.

Yeah, most of the reputable sites do not like, or will not, use beta drivers from either.

Link Guess we both agree that this site's reviews are not the greatest. 😉

As to the price of hl2, close to $60.00 canadian for the bronze version.

Looks like your in luck OnEMoReTy, Anand just might use beta's as ronnn has pointed out that they have done it before.

I guess 60.00c isn't so bad for the highly anticipated DX9 game. 🙂

eh, we knew this was coming. ATI partnered with Valve or whatever to offer HL2 coupons with their retail videocards. I know, I bought one back then. 🙂

Doom3 = nvidia
HL2 = ati

what game would you like to play today?

HL2 HL2!!!!!!!

maybe I'll just keep my 9800 Pro, Doom3 was garbage, but I know HL2 will be sweet!

HL2 trumps Doom3 and Far Cry.... I encourage all Nvidia and ATI fan-peoples to call for a cease fire and enjoy the game together 😉

😛

BTW BFG if you are reading this... I think HL2's implementation of Havok(tm) physics is THE BEST EVAR!

HL2 is simply amazing. I threw trash at a security guy and he beat me with his cattle prod. I was also enjoying throwing pots, pans, tvs, and shelves through the windows at the guards on the street below 😛
Doom 3 was such a letdown, Im really happy HL2 came through 🙂

DH = :roll:

Like others have stated, its not surprising thtat ATI dominates HL2. You'd hope they would since they've been leeched onto Valves crotch for 2 years.

HL2 is a badass game, just like (IMO) Doom 3 is.

Still waiting to see the benches from AT or FS to decide which card I want. The ATI x800 XT PE looks awesome with that Minotaur guy on it. Probably end up getting an ASUS Ultra with the chick on it or might get the Deluxe depending on the case I get. Or I could test the waters with a BFG Tech 6.8k U O/C.

Hopefully we get to see some OTHER benches here shortly to see how big the performance gap is. I don't consider 5 fps a big gap so we will see. If it is 10% or more that would be slightly impressive to me...

wait... you base (partially) your choice of video cards on the mascot displayed on the packaging of the box?!:Q

No. I am still going to get a 6800 Ultra most likely, no reason not to. I am not biased against ATI either. I was just stating that the minotaur looks pretty damn sweet. Won't even be able to see it in my case anyways so it is really irrelevant.

You be suprised how many things you choose based on looks, size, dimension, and the ratio (proportional) both consciously and subconsciously. It really is fascinating.

one thing is for sure, the chick on the box should definately determine your purchase.

Do you get social security for that mental disability?

(puts his foot firmly in it 😀 ) I would put good money (if i had any) on the x800xtpe still giving the 6800u a bit of a kicking in hl2 even when somewhere like AT benches it (and i hope that will be 'unbiased' enuff for everyone 😛).

Cant wait to get paid 2morrow, the screenshots look droolworthy, i cant wait to have a play with the physics engine, and from the benches i've seen it will run quite awesomely enuff on my 9800 pro 🙂

Gee- funny how every other site on the web totally disagrees with the BS DriverHeaven propaganda, isn't it?

The horse is dead man, stop beating it.

Actually driverheaven is a good site with lots of usefull tools and such. Zardon does admit to cherry picking in the sense that he did his benchies only when the action was heavy (hardocp used a whole level)- so gives a different sense to the whole thing. Anand didn't bother using an xt pe, hardocp used oc models etc. This whole benching thing has got a little strange. Did find it interesting that anantech gave the iq to ATI, but did not bother with max settings and no mention of texture shimmering in any other review until nvidia fixed it. They are all biased - so live with it.

So ok the 6800 ultra gets beat by up to 22% by the x800 XT (no PE ) from what i have read on some internet sites. bear in mind that this is with 8x AF and 4x FSAA @ 1600x1200, and without the FSAA things ar a lot more in line. Things look even worse for nvidia by the fact that the 6800GT, a fully fledged, all the pipe-lines-a-go-go part equals the performance from the x800 - pro, a card that retails at the price of the 6800GT but with its 12 pipelines should really be in the 6800NU sector ( really badly placed price wise by ATI IMHO ). but then lets look at things here i a bit more depth. U can have a 6800Gt and run hl2 at 1600x1200 and still get 77fps with a 4000+ behind it.
hardly a crushing defeat for the 6800Gt, let alone the ULTRA (80fps).
slap on FSAA @ 4x and the ULTRA still whacks home a tasty 65.6 FPS.

So, to recap the ATI killer app yes the ATI is 20% faster but the ULTRA still holds down a nice 65 FPS in the most demanding of settings on this games. Lets take Nvidias Killer APP, doom 3:

well at 1600x1200 4x FSAA ULTRA settings the 6800GT, a card in a class below the highest end radeon, scores 5.1 FPS faster than the x800 xt-PE. this is about 20% faster.

at 1600x1200 /ULTRA witout the FSAA a 6800 ULTRA scores 66.6 FPS the x800 XT-PE scores 51.5 FPS

so again, around About 20% faster. yet in both cases ( especially the hl2 / nvida
side of things ) either card still poffers performance which is very good.

yes half life 2 does run a tad nicer on ATI hardware, and yes, DOOM 3 the same on Nvidia, but either archetecture will play either game at very acceptable levels, and i dont think any owner of either card / game will be really dissapointed with given combinations.

There is one thing i have to say though, its intresting to note that in nvidias defence, there low-high end part, the 6800GT is much better rounded for the money. It plays doom 3 amazingly, and still delivers 65 FPS in hl2 at 16x12.

the same cannot be said of the x800-
PRO. this card is good in hl2, but suffers very badly in doom 3 compared to its nvidia counterpart. whilst the proice range is the same, it is safe to say that a 400$ NV part will play both doom 3 and hl2 pretty much fllawless ly yet x800-pro will get skitty at 16x12 in doom 3 whilst a GT will not.

I dont have much to base this on othe rthan personal feelings, but i wonder if there are others, who, like me, feel x800 pro is sat in a bad market position, priced to high for the perfoirmance it delivers compared to its bigger brother, and its nvidia stablemate.

Actually here the x800pro is cheaper, but that is really not the issue. If you bought a gt be happy, worrying why ati has slightly better frame rates and maybe slightly better IQ on hl2 is just a total waste of energy. Those just considering the big purchase can at least know that a bad decision can not be made.

Alas, only a handful of people are still playing Doom3. I actually liked the game - thought it was a fun brainless shooter, but I won't be playing it again. Since I've beaten it, it has become way too boring, repetitive and formulaic (door opens, scare moment, shoot guy with biggest gun you have. Rinse, repeat).

HL2, on the other hand, will be played and replayed by many for months...

I don't think the X800 Pro is in a bad position at all, considering it generally retails for about $50 less than the GT. I think it's a card that is slightly inferior to the 6800GT and in a class above the 6800nu.

I just beat HL2 on normal difficulty. I have a 6800GT and i played through the whole game at 1600x1200 with 4x/8x and it delivered awesome gameplay. it did start to stutter slightly, but very rarely, and only in areas where high fps wasn't crucial. Even when the fps dropped to around 25, the game was very playable (unlike far cry which has input lag at low fps). The point here is that the 6800GT can provide acceptable gameplay at 16x12 with high AA/AF, so both the 6800U and xtpe would be great choices for HL2.

I've been wondering what cards are supposed to be competing in the high end... There's the XT and XTPE and then the Ultra and Ultra Extreme. I guess I was assuming that the XT and Ultra were supposed to compete and the XTPE competed with the UE, but I keep seeing the regular Ultra up against the XTPE. What's going on with that?

Ultra Extreme is vapourware- only 200 made i think, and now nvidia claim they were never made at all 😛

quote from Toms

'Nvidia's GeForce 6800 Ultra Extreme, which was announced by the company one day after ATI's X800 XT PE, never became available on the market; we only saw the card up for auction briefly on one website in August. A spokesperson from Nvidia claimed later that the card never officially existed, and that the name "Ultra Extreme" had been a fabrication of the media.'

So there u go 🙂
