Ati card much better in HTPC then Nvidia

I have a 6600 in my Htpc hooked up to a 50" Plasma from dvi to Hdmi. I also have a x1800xt in my main comp that i tried with the plasma and it gave a much better picture.

On the 6600 the resolution would not set to the plasmas Native Res of 1360x768 without flickering like crazy. So i set it to 1280x720 and it worked but the overscan was horrible. All the Nvidia overscan correction did was lower the res making it look like crap.

On the x1800xt all i had to do was set the res to 1360x768 and it looked great. Why cant i do the same on the Nvidia card and why is there so much overscan on it while its not a problem for the ati card.

nVidia is a gamer's card, ATI does a little bit of everything but doesn't hold the performance crown.

Depends on what your priorities lie.

Lol, I meant more generally. Obviously a direct matchup of the cards the x1800xt wins but they aren't meant to directly compete with each other, one is a $30 video card, the other is $150.

When did i say anything about gaming. Im talking about the resolution of my desktop. Did you read my whole post. I know the x1800xt is a lot more powerful then the 6600 but that is irrelevant.

Which card did you try in the HTPC system first?
How did you go about the drivers installs/removals for each?
Do you have a driver for your display?
Are you running Windows Media Center? XP?

I never swapped cards it was two different comps with the latest drivers for their cards. The one with the 6600 is my Htpc with xp media center edition and the one with the x1800xt is my main comp with xp pro. I doubt theres a driver for the tv.

In the nvidia control panel i have to manualy add the resolution 1360x768 it works but it flickers while in the ati control panel it is there already and works fine.

I had a similar problem - changed the cable to DVI-d to DVI-d on my lcd. No more overscan and improved picture - el cheapo nVidia worked just fine.

Maybe I was just lucky . . .

I had a similar problem a few years ago. Tried to get an 848x480 resolution on a 40" Plasma. Tried numerous video cards but couldn't find one that ran 848x480 without issues. Then I finally put in a POS ATI rage pro 128 card, and didn't bother loading the drivers (I let Windows do it). It finally worked. it was a fluke to be sure, but very frustrating. In the end, an ATI card ran the strange res.

I was not commenting on your post, but as it was in your thread .. must have been off topic.

I upgraded for a GF6800 to an X1950gt and I noticed an image increase immediately upon upgrading using DVI to HDMI.
