ATI Card Comparison

I currently have a 128MB ATI 9600 Pro. How much better is a 9800 Pro then the 9600?

And what does the AIW bring to the table? Just adds the ability to be a PVR?

Thanks

😕

It's *at least* 50% faster (8 pipes, 256-bit memory versus 4 pipes, 128-bit memory)... that's usually called a "big" increase.

Matthias are you sure? 50% faster I doubt that... The 9800 pro may have more pipes and 256 memory bus, but you forget the 9600 pro has highier clock speeds to help make up for those differences.

I agree the 9800pro is quite a bit faster but I wouldn't buy a 9800pro right now... a 6600GT is about the same price and is much faster than the 9800 pro...

Do you smoke crack? The deiffernce between a 9600 xt and 9800 pro in doom 3 terms eqauls 35 fps medium quality 800x600 to 50 fps high quality 1024X768. Thats what my gains were. When I started using a X800 Pro it was 58 fps Ultra qaultity 1280x1024 2xAA, to finsh it off When I bought my current card BFG 6800 GT I can get 75 fps 1280x1024 ultra noAA and 53 fps ultra 4xAA 1280x1024. Hope this helps! BTW I spent like $1300 on graphics cards in 5 months trying to get at that sweet spot so learn from my mistakes.

Wow some newbies to the Video Card scene. Just look at some Benchies and do the math yourself please. Atleast 50% is being conservative, I would say 100%.

Yes, I'm sure. Please just stop. Go read some benchmarks.

A 9600Pro is clocked at 400/300, and a 9800Pro is clocked at 380/340, with twice the pipes and bandwidth. On a purely theoretical basis, it's like a 9600Pro clocked at 760/680. It's easily 50% faster, and more like 100% when AA/AF start to make the 9600Pro bandwidth-limited. The 9600XT, clocked at 500/300, is a little closer, but not by much.

I agree the 9800pro is quite a bit faster but I wouldn't buy a 9800pro right now... a 6600GT is about the same price and is much faster than the 9800 pro...

If you shop around, you can usually find 9800Pros for ~$180, whereas most AGP 6600GTs are still up around $200. It's a small enough difference that the 6600GT is almost always a better buy, however (barring extra deals/rebates). The 6600GT is usually about 15-30% faster than a 9800Pro.

Oh alright my bad. I havn't looked at 9600 pro bench's in QUITE a long time lol I personally thought it was closer to 30% difference but I on 2nd thought your probably right in it being 50%.

Either way I would go with a 6600 GT instead of the 9800 Pro... They are priced pretty much the same, with quite a bit more performance.

If you read what you wrote without prior knowledge of the video card market, you might get the impression that the speed difference between the 6600 GT and the 9800 Pro is LARGER than the speed difference between a 9800 Pro and 9600 Pro...

I agree the 9800pro is quite a bit faster [than a 9600Pro]
6600GT is... much faster than the 9800 pro

😕

Based on your other postings I don't think you intended to give that impression. I would definitely call the difference between the 9800P and the 6600GT more marginal than the difference between the 9600P and the 9800P.

Are you guys talking about 6600GT AGP?

So the consensus is that the 6600GT is a better card then the 9800pro for around the same loot?

Yes, the 6600GT is better than the 9800 pro if you pay the same. Frames/Dollar varies if you pay more/less. IF you can get a 9800 Pro for around 100 dollars used (and you can), its a lot more worth it than a 6600GT.

$100!!! Are you serious???

The 9800pro is definitely much faster than the 9600pro, especially when you play at high resolutions with AA/AF. The 9600 clock rate can't make up the difference, because even the older 9500pro (slower clock + 8 pipelines) was faster than the 9600pro.

I love my ATI x800Pro AGP 256MB...but I don't know that much about the 9600s and 9800s and how they stack up. I had a problem with mine 2 months after I bought it and had to RMA it, but since I live in Canada and that's where they fix them, I got a new one in 4 days by FedEx.

WOOT for World of Warcraft! 🙂

Ok.. Now can someone tell me if there is any performance difference between a 128 MB 9800 Pro and 256 MB 9800 XT?

Also, do the 9800 XT's have a problem with heat?

don't get a 9800 xt or a 256 meg 9800 pro.

the xt is too pricey for it's negligible performance increase over the pro, and the 256 meg pro performs EXACTLY the same as the 128 meg version of the 9800 pro.

never heard of a heat problem with the xt.

Well I just purchased a 128 9800 Pro for $125 today but I may have the opportunity to get a 256 9800XT for $100...

Sooooo.. I was just wondering what the differences between the two were.

Thanks

The xt has higher core and memory clock speeds, and has some other optimisations, but overall it's about 10% faster than a regular 9800pro. I don't know the details of the optimisatons, but when I flashed my 9800p with the xt bios, my benchmark scores increased, even when I "downcklocked" it to regular 9800p speeds. But it's not the kind of difference that you'll notice when running games.

If you can get the xt for $100, then go for it, it's a steal whichever way you look at it. But paying retail price isn't worth it for an xt. Anyways, I bought a zalman cooler for my, and it now runs 455/370. The stock 9800pro speeds are 380/340, I think. I'm seeing about a 15-20% improvement over stock settings.

Got the 9800 Pro today.. What are some tips on how to make this thing run the fastest? What changes do I make in the display properties, etc??

Thanks much!

I just leave stuff at default settings, I don't like sacrificing image quality for speed. But you can always but an aftermarket cooler and oc it to hell, like i did with mine.

The 9800 Pro and XT are within 5% of each other. The 9800XT will never beat the 6600gt overall reguarless of how well your card overclocks.

The 9800 Pro is 50-200% faster than the 9600 Pro depending on the circumstance.
