Hold up, this is rather odd. For one thing, he ordered it the day it was announced, and just now got this email. I ordered it as soon as it was available through alienware and got mine like a month ago. Plus, the card is available at online retailers, so it's out there.

Well, that does seem to suck.
BS dude, this is the worst display of availability I've ever seen. I like ATI over Nvidia, but this is horse dung in my opinion. Low availability of cards, no AGP counterparts, and high prices because they are having manufacturing problems they said would be resolved... That SUCKS. But I still like ATI better, but I'm not gonna hesitate to get an Nvidia card when ATI can't get their sh|t straight. ...which is exactly what I did.
I'm also sick of waiting for ATI cards (X800XL) to become reasonably priced.

Regardless of performance, NV is whipping the snot out of ATi when it comes to availability this time around...

why does it matter where i order it from? if i ordered one through ATI, i still want my card...what if newegg did the same thing? and how much did you pay for it through Alienware? $650? it is available at online retailers, but there are virtually NONE...thats why when you do see them they are super expensive (over msrp). and really, how high is the demand? how many people are willing to shell out that much money for the card?

The problem is that both ATI and NV pretty much suck on PCIe availability. It's strange because I hear many complaining that the companies are ignoring AGP, but that does not seem to be the case IMO. If you are on AGP you can get 6800GT for pretty cheap (relatively speaking) as well as X800pros.
If you go to PCIe though, you really have far fewer choices.
I'm hoping the X800XL will eventually become widely available for something close to MSRP (and I was contemplating ordering one from ATI's webpage), but now I have misgivings about ATI's ability to deliver on their website orders (which was a feeling I had already given the X800XT situation).

not really; you have MORE choices in the high-end segment. just at inflated prices.
the x800XL has been dropping in price (its around $370 at newegg) and i expect it to be at ~$320 within the next month.
there are plenty of PCIe cards available that will crush the 6600GT. search "6800 x16" on newegg; or "x800 x16"

The demand is massive, that's why the price is so high! Didn't you take any kind of economics in school? An ATI spokesperson even pointed this out in an interview. They sent out the cards, and they sold out, they had no idea the high end cards would be so popular. They increased production with the new cards after x800, but they are still very popular. When I got it, it was cheaper than an x800, I didn't pay a huge price for it. It was like the first day alienware had them, so they probably had no reason to think of charging more. In fact, shortly after that they just stopped selling them altogether except in their bleeding edge systems.
dude we are talking about x850XT's here...im pretty sure the demand is NOT massive for that bleeding edge card. The price is high because they cant ship enough to meet demand, yes, but how high IS the demand for the x850xt's? i'm thinkin that they are just getting really crappy chip yeilds.
People pre-ordered the cards from ATi cause its one of the few places to sell their products at or lower than(only if you have a coupon code) MSRP. While stores like New Egg, ZZF and others charge about $100 and UP over the MSRP for most of the X800,X850 and GF 6800 series. Recently ATI began taking pre-orders for the X800 XL for 299 whereas online shops are charging $350-$500 for them.
Its kinda hard to believe that with so many manufacturers out there, that they are unable to make enough high end cards. I don't believe ATI or NV is having trouble producing the chips, its more likely the manufacturer trying to drive up prices by producing them slowly or resellers holding back the supply and making it look like a shortage. But who knows maybe there is really a shortage, only those working their would truly know the answer.
