Guys,

If you've noticed an increase in issues where your trusty old video card has started to have issues, or you possibly received a new ATi card and all of a sudden you have artifacts, I believe I have figured out why.

The issue is related to the drivers / catalyst manager. How do I know?

I've had a 5770HD for the past 2 years. As of the last month or so, it has had artifacts. I attributed this to a card that has just had its years put to it (I was not the first owner) so I ordered a new 6850.

Just got it today and popped it in. Yep - issues from the get go. I uninstalled drivers, reinstalled, updated to latest, etc. In the meantime I monitored the temps via HWMonitor and noticed that what it would do is heat up to 75c then go blank and turn back on near 65c, heat up to 75c then go blank (IE cool down), then go back to 65c again. Nothing worked... UNTIL...

I simply uninstalled the Catalyst Manager and let Win 7 pick my drivers (They are dates 11/9/11). Popped on the exact same game (SC2) and ran HWMonitor in the background...

Not only did it never artifact, the temperature never went above 71c, thus never artifacted and also never crashed.

Whatever is causing this issue is in the new drivers AMD has released. I'm certain that this cause my 5770 to run too hot and has now caused permanent damage, which caused me to order the 6850 to begin with. Unfortunately I didn't figure out what was going on until the 6850 arrived.

I hope this helps someone else, and you can probably confirm by using my same test. Turn on a graphic intensive game (My choice - SC2, I picked any cinematic) and run HWMonitor on a second screen and just watch your temps go up. Uninstall Catalyst Manager and you'll likely see different results.

If anyone can confirm this will be excellent.

Thanks.

My 5750 and 7950 are not having this issue. Just played BF3 for 1.5 hours and only got up to 56C. My 7750 rarely got over 65C.

I just updated to 12.1 today, or was it yesterday.... Anyways, no problems with my 5870 so far, other than the Firefox freaking out my card about whether to use 2D or 3D clocks....

This was for the people actually having issues. I've seen a few threads on it recently.

It is good to point out cards that are working, but when I googled the issue, it brought me to posts from 1/24 right from this very forum (and obviously I'm active here anyway).

I have a Sapphire 6850. (Will be going back either way, just trying to help others)

It is peculiar that as soon as I switch drivers, overheating goes away, and the games run really smooth.

Your old card might still be OK, I think it has hardware circuitry to throttle itself to keep under the dangerous temps, so don't write it off just yet and try to test it out, you could possibly sell it to recoup some costs.

Yeah I played with it after learning this... Couldn't get it working without artifacts. It artifacts even on my desktop so it is likely doomed.

It's just scary knowing that drivers could cause me heating issues, although clearly at least the 6850 has measures in place to cool itself down. As long as those don't fail I guess you're good.

I had issues with DVD and BR playback through PowerDVD, VLC and WMP with my 5570 that started with a CCC update. It would stutter horribly and basically was a slideshow. Uninstalling CCC/drivers and letting Windows install the drivers fixed the issue.

I'm not really happy with that resolution, but since it's a HTPC and all it needs to do is play BR/DVD and stream movies I don't feel like putting the time into it since it works fine right now.

Yeah sounds ideal. I just wanted to get this out there in case other people are actually having heating issues, which can be a major problem.

Since I was linked as one of the people having issues.

My issues actually started on an older driver (I don't remember which one), and I updated my drivers to 12.1 to see if that would fix the problem--it didn't.

My temps do get pretty high (I get like 90 C on my VRAM), but I don't think it's the drivers, since the fan profile on my card is messed up until I boot into windows an GPUtool kicks in.

I can try to uninstall the 12.1 drivers and use an older version to test your theory if you like. Which drivers would you suggest downgrading to?

I just simply uninstall and let Win 7 pick them - that fixed my issue. The drivers were dated 11/9/11 in Device Manager.
