It's important that they shoot high on their choices, as the next generation consoles will be strait jacketing game development for the five years after their release.

Makes sense, MS is never going to forgive nV for refusing to lower GPU prices over time for the xbox-1. nV made a little extra in the short term but hurt themselves in the long run.

PS4 will go with another nV part if Sony is smart and pays attention to the duct-tape success of the Wii (Cell 2.0 with more general-purpose cores, back-compatible nV card).

The GPU for both doesn't need to be more than maybe a 5850 class since resolution is limited to 1080p.

Well, the consoles need to actually make it to 1080p first, and then add some AA/AF. Personally, I hope that they use something a little beefier than a 5850 so they can apply the aforementioned AA/AF to 1080p, plus have a little room to grow over the console's lifetime.

THe more important news is that the current systems are good till 2012.

I don't think many other companies have anything comparable either. nV has a great product in Tegra. However, I've heard Tegra 2 might not be a full SoC? Which IMO is getting away from what it should be if that is in fact the case.

No. Consoles are the bane of PC gamers because they dictate so much for us, but for the GPU manufacturers they are a gold mine


Design one good GPU with a good driver set and sell millions of units with little needed to be done after the initial release? Jackpot!

This came out two months ago hence the date on the article.

If they produce these until 2012 they will be selling for $99 brand new by then. They will be a joke compared to a high-end PC.
