How well will it perform, and when will it be available for the older hardware?
 
It's available now. 🙂 Performance obviously varies depending on the amount of screen space occupied by alpha textures, but I don't have any benchmark numbers. I think there are some in that thread.
 
From AT's Review: "The use of this feature on most older hardware won't be widespread as performance will degrade too much. In these cases, increasing resolution is almost always more effective than increasing AA quality.
