ATI 9800 Pro vs NVIDIA GeForce4 Benchmarks

I just replaced my NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4200 video card with the ATI All-In-Wonder 9600 Pro video card. The two video cards benchmarked with nearly identical 3DMark2001SE overall scores, but the ATI card benchmarked much better (like a 2.5 times higher overall score) under 3DMark03. Why does the ATI benchmark so much higher under 3DMark03? Just curious. Thanks!

First of all, there is a HUGE difference between the 9800 Pro you mention in the title and the 9600 Pro you list in the body. :)

I would think the two cards are similar in 3DM01 because it's a older version and it can't really take advantage of the new technology of the 9600. Whereas 3DM03 can use the features of the 9600 and that explains the difference in the scores.

The 9600 and 9800 can each run an extra game test (4) in 3DM03, not to mention they're also higher-clocked and possibly have more powerful DX8 shaders than the GF4.

You'll notice that in 03 the ti4200 skips one of the tests, since it's not dx9. So, it's getting 0 points for that test, which kills its score.

Sorry for the confusion. It's a 9600 Pro. Looks like the replies help explain the benchmark difference either way. Thank you!

Another difference is that 3dmark2k1 relies a lot on the cpu and other parts of the system, whereas 3dmark2k3 is much more concentrated on video card performance.
