Our brethren the Ferengi originally only existed in the world of star trek. Through some chance interstellar breakthrough, though, they have shown themselves on the Internet in great numbers since the founding of E!bay. It is not like Ebay created the ferengi on earth, they were always there but preferred to stay out of the sun counting their gold. The Ferengi are ruthless profit barons of the universe, stemming originally from the idea of a purely capitalist society. Proffit makes right.

I think they have these 'rules of aquisition' that establish their moral conduct and rule number one applies in this thread, A contract is a contract is a contract--but only between Ferengi.

Once again.....

Do you all realize how many incredible HOT DEALS have been found AND delivered that were "price mistakes". A very big percentage of the hot deals are made this way.

You all do need to stop calling. If you don't want to take the chance.... then just pass on by. But calling so that you make yourself "feel" better about a deal..... is bad for the deal. It blows it. (gee... imagine that).

If YOU don't think that price mistakes = a HOT DEAL... tell that to the member here that obtained his (3) 43" Plasma screen TV's for $350.00 each (they were supposed to be 10,000.00 each) last year.;) Or the numerous others that have obtained amazing deals through pricing errors.

Don't think that price mistakes never pan out. They do. But I promise you.... if you CALL the vendor, you can forget it.

Also.... my local "big chain", Staples price matches any online vendor I print out for them (they know me well :))

Yes PCMarine.... it happens. It used to happen a lot more around here until we started aquiring members that make that lethal phone call. Many hot deal posters.... went away, or just keep it to themselves now.

From reading some of the members posts above.... (thinking that it is perfectly fine to phone the companies), I think you can see the downfall of what used to be VERY SWEET deals.

I think with something like a pricing error there is a risk to accept, some will accept that risk and others won't. Personally, I'd rather not take the risk. What I don't understand is what people expect to accomplish by calling a dealer/retailer about an obvious pricing error. Don't fool yourseleves into thinking that by calling them you might magically find out that $133 is a price that they can sell a $350 video card to you and still make a profit. Are you hoping to hear: "yeah, they fell off a truck and we got our hands on 'em and we just want to get rid of them as quickly as possible so we're selling 'em for $133?"

People should just figure out what their tolerence for risk is and act accordingly, not engage in pointless activity.

Oh well, onto the next "deal." I think I'll pick up that Dell 18" Flat Panel to help ease the pain and suffering of another lost deal.
Don't get any ideas about calling Dell either. On second thought, better order quick before everyone starts calling. That's alright, you'll be on hold for a half an hour while I order 50.

Thanks for the deal post. Don't let one bad one ruin it.

10-4 roger that

you guys are welcome, I will post again if I see one. Just hope some people learned something from this. If so I still call it a good deal.

Maybe you should learn from this, be real.

I did, there are a lot of idiots here. Callers = idiots. The bad thing about it is that the people who called probably couldn't afford the video card in the first place, they just wanted to screw it up for others. Yeah, I learned a whole lot.

Again: If you want to get in on a price mistake, THE LAST THING IN THE WORLD YOU SHOULD DO IS POST NEWS OF IT ON THE INTERNET AND ENCOURAGE EVERYONE ELSE TO PILE ON!!!

It's so naive to think that it was a PHONE CALL that got this deal cancelled, not the 84,000% increase in daily orders for this item.

Unfortunately, you can't stoke your own ego AND get in on a price mistake deal. So if you find one, decide whether you want to be popular here, or whether you want the best possible shot at getting the item, because you can't have both.

Just wanted to say thanks to the callers for ruining any possibility...

Was it a shot in the dark? yes

Was it unlikely that it would come ? yes

did you ruin ANY chance by calling? YES

Would it have hurt anything to keepy our stupid mouth shut and just wait it out? No

Some have criticised the poster for posting this, saying that if he wanted it to come through he should have never shared it... Nice logic dufus. It's cool to rip on people for trying to share eh?

Callers and thread crappers should be banned

This deal was dead from the beginning. The phone call had nothing to do with it. Here is a small company that probably had less than 10 of these in stock(if even that many) and suddenly there were probably 2000-10000 ordered. Well, you don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure out something is wrong. And yes, sometimes people do get some incredible deals. I personally have received a few, for example.....a 20PK of hard drives for $49.99 (when hard drives were EXPENSIVE), a $699 digicam for $49, at least 20 Nikon 995 for under $100 a piece, etc. It usually requires a big company for these deals to work though.... Oh I forgot, I bought about 15 IBM laptops for $599 when everyone else had them for $1400-$2000.....:)

but you can keep from being "unpopular here" by not calling.

...There is no way someone with 2k+ posts can argue that calling does not kill a deal. Rule #1 of Hot Deals: DO NOT CALL!!!!! This was in place since the begining.

Now whether a phone call killed this deal or not, isn't the issue: DO NOT CALL, give those willing to take a risk a fighting chance.

My god. This deal was dead a week ago...

How about letting this thread do the same?

You just keep ignoring what I'm saying.

Let me ask it pointedly: Do you believe that the 19,000% spike in orders for this item that likely resulted from this post played a roll in the cancellations or not? Or are you assuming it was the one guy who called them?

This is not Amazon. They don't have some giant warehouse where orders are processed with an automated system with minimal human interaction. This site seems very low tech, meaning you probably place an order, and it crosses someone's desk who then is responsible for filling it. They would have recognized most likely with the FIRST order. By the 50th, the fix was certainly in.

So, again: IF you really want to get in on a price mistake, the last thing you should do is post news of it on the Internet.

they mighta shipped a few before the $5/an hour stock boy realizes...
I think they raised him to $7.50 when he started getting all those phone calls and reported it to Sid in the front office.:(

Dont most sites say they arent held responsible for misprints? Once they ship stuff out can they demand it back?

Ive never come across deals like this cause I simply dont have the time to find em. :(

I don't actually partake in hot deals, I just cruise the boards looking for vendors to call.

Sorta my hobby.

You should change the title to "ATI 9700pro for $133!!*DEAD*(I screwed myself by posting a price mistake to Anandtech before my order was shipped)".

It doesn't sound as good, but at least it would be truthful.
