Just wait til PCI-E and get a 6600GT or something like that, the 9700 Pro isn't exactly lacking much, unless you want to play your games at 1600 x 1200 resolution, in which case, a 6800 might be a good call. By the way, how do you like your 9700 Pro? I just won one on ebay, i'm not gonna lie, i'm pretty excited :)

I think it will hold you for a while longer. It runs Far Cry, Doom 3, and CSS fine and will probably run HL2 fine, at least at 10x7 imo. Wait till prices drop, it should hold you till then.

I had this Asus m.b. in the closet and didnt want to spend $$$ for a nice P4, so I paid $70bucks for the new celeron 2400mhz.Which i figure Will hold me down 4 a min until the prices on Athlon 64 FX-53 come down.

I would just check the hot deals forum until occasioanlly untill you can find a sweet deal on an x800xt. Anything else is probably not worth the upgrade.

The prices on the Athlon FX chips aren't going to drop much. You're much better off getting a non FX chip. A 3500+ would be a fraction of the price, and could OC (if you wanted) enough to pass the performance of an FX-53. Even staying stock, a 3800+ will be so close to an FX-53 that you wouldn't notice the difference, plus you'd save some money.

if u need a 16 pipeline card like the GT / Ultra or X800 XT, then I would say its worth it, provided you are willing to spill the cash..
Otherwise hold on to it for a while
