I'm using a ATI Radeon 9600 Pro [PCI] SERIES right now and it's junk, I always have problems with it, I'm really tired of this card, all it does is freeze windows at 100% and I still can't figure out why! Even after sending my pc info to ATI's costumer support they send me an email with useless links which don't catagorize my issue at all! Man, their cotumer support is terrible, they want you to make long distant calls instead..... If anyone could help me out It would be HIGHLY APPRECIATED, here is my pc information PLEASE HELP!

Graphics Card S/N: ATI Radeon 9600 Pro
Machine or Motherboard Brand/Model: Gigabyte K7 Triton (GA-7N400 Pro2)

Problem Description: *

Despite my efforts, my pc still hangs at 100% while running Windows XP SP1.
I've noticed whenever I play a PC Game, open Internet Explore, Mozilla Firefox,
and every other application(s) my pc hangs at 100% and freezes. I've also
installed the latest drives your site has provided. Usally when it hangs
playing audio the song or sound will loop like a skipped cd. This is getting Ridiculous!
I've tried everything I can think of

Steps to recreate the problem: *

1. Open 'any' application
2. In a matter of time the application freezes Windows XP at 100%
3. Hit CTRL+ALT+DEL and wait for Windows to stop freezing

Did this happen with any videocards before? Have you tried switching the card to other PCI slots? What are your temps and other hardware (MB, RAM, HDD, PSU, and any other devices in PCI slots)?

What do you mean "at 100%"?
How can you have a 9600 PCI? 9600 is only in AGP!

Is this an upgrade or is the operating system a fresh install since the install of the card?

What are your motherboard and CPU temperatures?

Are you overclocking the card?

You may want to tru AGP 4X instead of 8X.

Sorry for my ignorance, my 9600 Professional is an AGP. Nor am I overclocking because you cant over clock with the catalyst drivers installed. Second of all I've tried from fresh install and current installation, regarding either it's the same. My current temps for CPU, motherboard, and AUX are.

Note: My videos temp has'nt been determined

Did this happen with any videocards before? Have you tried switching the card to other PCI slots? What are your temps and other hardware (MB, RAM, HDD, PSU, and any other devices in PCI slots)?

This has'nt happened with any other video card. I've also switched slots. I just recently bought my Gigabyte K7 Triton (GA-7N400 Pro2) because I had another problem simular with my ASUS A7V8X. Except with my ASUS Mother board it would either freeze when trying to log on and/or restart my computer popping up a bluescreen error. Now it's a lot different it does niether of those, only when I'm logged onto a desktop enviroment. As far as my other hardwares temps I don't have anything to determine them do you?

No I mean it freezes within a period of time.... It's crazy because my CPU's Utilization stays at 100%.

Your heat seems to be just a little high. Check your intake and exhaust, make sure there is nothing restricting airflow thru the case.

Do you have the latest chipset drivers installed? ATI is a bit finicky, their drivers suck, and most of their testing is done on Intel (afaik). It also might help if we know the PSU.

How do you know the video card is the problem? Open up whatever your using to check temperatures. Make it detect every second then get the computer to lock and see how
high the temps are. Need cpu load temps not idle temp.

Did the best I could do, here's a picture I took directly after the system hung:

I've noticed that the CPU temps are staying at this rate now......
Your +5V rail is way out of spec and the minimum reading for your +12V rail is out of spec as well. Do you have a volt meter to verify those readings? What is the Make/Model of your power supply?

edit: If that case temperature of nearly 50*C is accurate, this is likely what is causing the PSU to run out of spec. Try running the computer with the case's side cover off and a large fan blowing into the machine to see if this is the cause.

most likely a software issue. find the executable, thru task manager, that is running 100% and kill it. you might have to do a uinstall/reinstall that software to fix it.

Well first of all Winodws XP is obviously going to jump up to 100% while opening an application. But the only thing that ponders my head is why it's freezing Windows (explore*.exe). Some people whould say well perhaps you have spyware, nope I use Mozilla Firefox. I scan my system daily for spyware also. Then people say well perhaps a virus, nope I don't download stupid stuff nor is someone going to exploit my system so dramatically. Then the funniest is when people tell me to update my BIOS. Ok, BIOS is only updated or messed with if it does'nt read a component...

You may indeed have to update your BIOS. Those sensor readings in your pic are pretty messed up ( This is something a BIOS update could fix ).

Ok, it sounds like your letting Windows XP handle all of your driver need except for the video card which you say you have installed the latest Catalyst drivers.

You need to start from scratch here.

1. Make sure you have all drivers from the manufacturers of your PC/PC parts.
a. Motherboard AGP/Chipset drivers (ex. ASUS, MSI, Dell)
b. Sound card drivers (ex. soundblaster live/audigy)
c. Network Interface card (NIC) (ex. Realtek, 3Com, NetGear)
d. Latest Catalyst Drivers
e. Any other device you have installed in a PCI slot or connected via USB, make
sure you have the drivers for them to.

If this is a storebought PC, go to the manufacturers website. If you built this yourself, you need to go to the manufacturers web site for evey component you have (with the exception of hard drives, CD rom & floppy drives or CPU & memory) and get the latest drivers for your Operating System that support these devices.

Download Direct X 9 from Microsoft.

If you have a CD burner, burn a CD with all of these drivers on them.

Format your PC ( if you want to) and install a fresh copy of your operating system.

Use the drivers from the CD you made to update all of your hardware devices.

If you know all of this, I'm going to be pretty pissed off because your letting on like you don't even know what a PSU is. So humor me and pretend you don't know even if you do. ;)

You need all the latest correct drivers for your computer to run well. If it turns out to be a heat issue after all, just try running with your case open and see if it helps.

It could be the cpu overheating. I'm sorry it this sound retarted, but have you tried underclocking your cpu? From my personal experience, the only time explorer.exe crash on me is when I'm overclocking something.

sounds like keysplayr2003 has quite the right idea, i'd listen to him OP. If your BIOS is reporting bad readings (looks like it is) then definitely updating it and updating the drivers for your mb in xp is also a very good idea.
