ATI 9600 pro and 9600 XT questions

Hello,

I just bought a 9600 Pro but I just found out about the 9600 XT. Is it worth the wait and the extra $30 when it comes out? Also, is there much speed difference between an ATI 9600 Pro 128 meg or a generic 9600 Pro 256 meg card? Thanks. Sorry if this question was already asked.

I havent looked at graphics cards in about 10 months but try the Anandtech Video Card Roundup. They very recently covered the 9600XT and compared it to the PRO.

Draw your own conclusions.

Well, if the 9600XT costs you only $30 more. It worth the money with a core clock 500 mhz from the pro's 400mhz. Round about a 10% preformance increase. By the way, If you can find the Asus 9600XT it would be the best buy. Have got according to the spec sheet a memory clock of 750 mhz compared to the ATI 9600XT of 600mhz. For $30 more a definite must buy.

I would get the XT. A $30 difference, for a bit of extra performance, AND a copy of HL2 which most probablycovers the $30 extra you're going to pay (if you want Half Life 2) - basically you get a better performing card for free.

Also, one site overclocked the 9600XT to almost 600MHz on the core (596 or something IIRC), which is pretty nice.

Agreed. If the difference is only $30, switch only for HL2, and take the extra speed as a bonus.

Current 256MB 9600 "Pro's" have very slow memory (regular 9600 speed: 200MHz instead of 300MHz), so avoid them. I've heard that both Sapphire and Powercolor will offer full-speed memory on their 256MB 9600XT's, though, and some versions with even faster memory--very promising. Here's what happens with faster memory.

The difference in preformance is so miniscule between them, only reason to not keep is if you want HL 2 for about 10 less.

I would go with the recommendation to return the 9600 pro and get a 9600xt for +$30. But that is the difference now, once the 9600XT actually is available for a bit the pricing delta may very well be more than $30. Either way you will win if you wait a month or so
