AGP and ATI drivers

This is related to the poster with a question related to his AGP x1950PRO. I have a ATI AGP X800 AIW and driver release 7.8 was the last release that worked with a lot of AGP (going by what ive seen on many site forums) cards. 2d works fine on all the recent display driver releases however 3d does not work for most games. Whatever they added to 7.9 to support newer games like Quake Wars and Bio Shock nerfed AGP cards for any older games. If I install 7.9 to 7.11 display drivers I can play quake wars or demo's of new games, however all my older games will not work (ie: CSs, DODs, HL2 games, DOW, COH, EVE-online, etc) It's erking me because ATI as far as I can see has not admitted to the problem and when you download drivers the release notes make no mention of the problem...

So for now I?m running 7.8 and can play all my games except newer titles like quake wars. I plan on building a new system by FEB 08, but bottom line I just wish ATI would admit the problem or stop saying they still support card ranges that include AGP versions and just say hey AGP users stick with 7.8 or 3rd party drivers.

lOUD!!!

that really sucks ... i guess you could dual-boot
- i did that for awhile with Vista and XP ... in your case it would be one partition with the older Cats and the other with the new ones

Yeah, according to a lot of forum posters, Nightmare is broken, but according to the devs it is working as intended. Either way I doubt I will ever try it.

KT

Hg:L is completely playable on Nightmare ... there are even SP "issues" and you need to change your strategy completely, but my Summoner is Level 36 and am 2/5th thru the MQ again
-it is called *Nightmare* for a reason :p
:Q

ANYWAY, even though i now have DX10, i still prefer DX9 in Hg:L ... only the 'effects' look better in DX10

diablo 2 on nightmare was a royal pain, too. still, 1 million hours into a game should at least warrant an 8/10, right? ;)

[last few posts]
-i got frustrated with it Sat night and am back playing Sunday ... Unfortunately there ARE bugs - Do i not clearly see the Cursed "EA" symbol of Satan on the Hellgate box?

7/10 ... after 150 hours of play
:Q

:D

the new Cats couldn't fix the Hg:L gameplay issues ... nightmare not being one of them

Nope, the AGP X1950Pro works fine with the latest cats (and any other as well) under vista.

My A64/NF3 setup has a Sapphire X1950Pro AGP in it and it runs vista fine with the latest cats.

My P-D 820/4coredual rig can also run the Sapphire perfectly fine in vista.

the AGP issue seems to be a Windows XP related problem.

Well there ya go, so XP users running latest DX9 and have an AGP card will have to wait for ATI to come out and say bug issue or dropped support issue, or may just shhhh forever.

Question though Stumps, can you play older games fine ? do you have any of the games in my original post.

Yes my AGP systems can run Bioshock and Quake wars reasonably well (1024x768 res), although you need 2GB of ram under Vista to make anything playable, 1GB IMHO just doesn't seem to provide smooth gameplay.

As for the older games, CS:S and HL2 run fine under vista, I haven't got the others you listed so I can't vouch for them.

I should add that normally my P-D 820@3.6Ghz rig normally runs a Gigabyte 8800GTS 640, but it has in the past run the Sapphire that is in my A64 3000+@2.87ghz rig with out any issues under vista.

I noticed through many forums that many people are having problems with Catalyst 7.11, with the error messages "notify" "data.size()!=1" and "'0x80040707'" during the setup (that, by the way, doesn't finish).

Has that been fixed already?

I'm not sure if that error has been fixed, however what I do know is, if you own an ATI/AMD card that?s AGP of several card series, running on any motherboard / chipset, your going to possibly run into major problems running any driver release after 7.7 - 7.8, whatever they added in 7.9 to support newer game titles, broke AGP for lots of users. My personal lab testing showed, newer games would work like dx10 supporting games and just new titles, quake wars, and new game demos, but older games won't work, if I roll back to 7.8 all my games work except newer titles.

I have an x800 series card, People are complaining all over the ATI/AMD forums about the problems, everyone getting mainly D3D and DX errors, ATI/AMD has remained quiet and do not mention these problems in the driver release notes, and claim to still support the cards.

So just stick with the drivers that last worked great, and wait.

Battlefield 1942 will not run under 7.11 or the Sapphire drivers that came with my HD3870

An error message of
"A debugger has been detected"
"Unload the debugger and try again"
appears.

Clean install of XP sp2.

Onboard sound of Abit IP35-E, no audigy card installed.

I tried installing the 7.9 drivers but they won't work with the HD3870.

I'm certain it is the drivers as I don't get the error message when I unload the drivers and try to start the game. The game won't get much past the start screen then though because there aren't any video drivers installed.

Any ideas?

I submitted a ticket to ATI but would not expect anything for a couple of months.

Yes, I want to play BF1942 on this card. (For the people that suggest buying a new game)

Thanks,

edit/
Apparently I'm not the only one with this problem, but I can't go to earlier drivers with the HD3870.
